About this item

Thirteen is the legal thriller Lee Child, Michael Connelly, and Ruth Ware are raving about and readers can’t put down.

“Outstanding - an intriguing premise, a tense, gripping build-up, and a spectacular climax. This guy is the real deal. Trust me.” —Lee Child

“A dead bang BEAST of a book that expertly combines Cavanagh’s authority on the law with an absolutely great thrill ride. Books this ingenious don’t come along very often.” —Michael Connelly

It’s the murder trial of the century. And Joshua Kane has killed to get the best seat in the house – and to be sure the wrong man goes down for the crime. Because this time, the killer isn’t on trial. He’s on the jury.

But there’s someone on his tail. Former-conman-turned-criminal-defense-attorney Eddie Flynn doesn’t believe that his movie-star client killed two people. He suspects that the real killer is closer than they think – but who would guess just how close?

“A brilliant, twisty, ingeniously constructed puzzle of a book. Steve Cavanagh pulls off an enviable premise with panache.” —Ruth Ware

I’m ashamed to say that I read the prologue and didn’t think I’d enjoy it based on the writing style so I let this book sit for a long time. I picked it back up to officially start the real chapters, and wow! Very good read with some twists even I didn’t predict. It’s not often that happens when you’re a frequent reader. I highly recommend this one. Main character is lovable and flawed, and the timing of investigation and the case will have you on the edge of your seat.

The audible version of Steven Cavanagh's Thirteen kept me company on a nine-hour drive. I love legal thrillers, and Lee Child and the blurb had me purchasing. Adam Sims and his character portrayal and voice depth were amazing. But . . .

Much to like about a con artist/lawyer going up against a serial killer and a serial killer making it on to the jury, but not before he kills two potential jurors, one to take his identity, the second because he might be sympathetic to the defense, three, runs over a juror who cut in line and made him thirteen (and then he backs over her to ensure she was dead) -- thereby stumping the police. Later the antagonist gets one man kicked off while another commits suicide. And STILL the judge finds nothing amiss and doesn't postpone to look at how the jury might be tainted??) Sorry, I can suspend my belief just so much.

Eddie Flynn is three dimensional and is entirely likable and sympathetic. A protagonist equal to an antagonist. I was enthralled. Until the author makes Kane almost supernatural, he makes law enforcement so crooked and incompetent, and his over-the-top liberal bias ( as told by an Irish national no less), yanks me out of the story on at least five different occasions. One phone call to NYPD Internal Affairs after the corrupt homicide detective slams a fist into the defense attorney's ribs, would have solved Eddie's problems. Just sayin'.

On the whole, Thirteen was entertaining. It kept me listening. Although if I'd been reading I think I might have given up at the implausibility, although I fully admit the courtroom drama was exceptional and entertaining.

Finally, Steve Cavanagh is a talented storyteller. I might even read again, knowing he's stretches credulity. Instead of placing next to John Grisham, perhaps tuck him next to JK Rowling.

This was my first book by this author and it definitely won’t be my last!
I’ve been struggling to find a good thriller that was fast paced and kept my interest the whole time.
This is what I’d been looking for. It was absolutely incredible. And the plot, fantastic!
If you love psychological thrillers and/ or cop/lawyer shows, you have to read this one!
It may have been the first book of his that I read but it definitely won’t be the last!!

It was a bit lengthy but needed for all the character development! It had a good twist and I loved how the lawyer who didn’t even want to be on the case ended up solving it all!

Thirteen is a page turner, but it had too many killings for me. The storyline is very engrossing but I’m going back to my romcoms. Might read another of Cavanagh’s books in the future just to see if they all have such brutal murders.
