About this item

“With Jane Smith, Alex Cross has reason to be jealous” (Good Morning America). Hard to Kill features James Patterson’s greatest character yet–a tough-as-nails attorney up against a relentless killer.

Attorney Jane Smith is mounting an impossible criminal defense.

Her client, Rob Jacobson, is the unluckiest of the unlucky. No sooner is he accused of killing a family of three in the Hamptons than a second family is gunned down.

It’s not double jeopardy. It’s not double murder. It’s double
triple homicide.

Jane’s career has spanned from NYPD beat cop to Hamptons courtroom. She’s tough to beat. She’s even tougher to kill.

The defense may
never rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best character since the early days of Alex Cross

Patterson and Lupica are a great team. The Jane Smith book 2 is even better than the first. It's 3:30 a.m. and I want book 3 right now. The best part of Hard to Kill is that although Jane is defending Jacobson again the SOB is a very small part of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Constant Danger and Evil for Jane

This book was one surprise twist after another, starting with Jane taking on Rob Jacobson as a client in another murder trial. The surprises kept coming, with Jimmy as a strongly featured character in this book. There are a lot of bad guys who keep appearing at the most inopportune times for Jane and Jimmy. Jane is stoically going through another round of cancer treatments while she also tries to find out who is responsible for the recent murders and disappearances around town. The plot is fast-paced with tons of twists and the characters are relatable and mostly likable. I didn’t particularly like Rob because he is so arrogant and a real player in every sense of the word. This is a perfect book to read in one sitting, find out what is going on with Jane and read in amazement as Jane works out the mystery and Jimmy goes off the rails in his quest to solve the murder of his former partner. Enjoyed the story and loved Jane’s continuing battles against evil and cancer!

4.0 out of 5 stars Defending the same guy again for another similar crime - and so much more
Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2024
A top-notch woman character with her side kick are asked to defend the guy they got off in the first book. He's charged with multiple murders again. It certainly seems like a setup. But as they are trying to do their background, they are also dealing with threats and physical altercations. At the same time, Jane is dealing with a tough cancer to beat. And her sister's cancer is back.

I like the two main characters but there are so many bad guys and other characters in this book that it's hard to keep track. There's a lot happening in this book so it's not a mindless read - put on your thinking cap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!

This is the second book in the series where Jane is an attorney taking on cases while fighting cancer. As happened in the first book, more than just the cancer is trying to kill her. Her best Jimmy and her boyfriend Ben are also in this book, which leads to more storylines. Great book!

This is the second book in this series and it as another hit from the authors. A good mystery with a lot of suspense and page turning excitement. This is a book which I would recommend to all who like a good mystery.

1.0 out of 5 stars Well Below Patterson-Standard!

I think it's important that people know Jane Smith really isn't the lead character in this novel! As a matter of fact, she almost feels like an afterthought!
There is very little storyline devoted to what should be the lead character in the novel! And this book lacks the sharp prose and suspenseful page-turning that we have come to expect from Mr Patterson and even sportswriter Mike Lupica!
To me this novel was a complete waste of time and money, and if I had known that it was the 1st part of a 2 or 3 part series of books I never would of bought it!
All in all, this was complete drivel, and I would give it Zero stars if I could!
