About this item

Armed with comfy pants, overpriced coffee, and a highly anxious emotional-support corgi, I prepare to face him.
Corporate boss.
Villain.

I step into his office. His perfect mouth twists into a sneer.
There is no heart of gold beneath that suit, just a big black pit. He’s a shark in the frothy waters of high-stakes finance.
He might be the quintessential asshole CEO, causing all in his path to quake in fear, but he’s never had to face down a basic bitch in her thirties.

I am
exactly like the other girls—I adore Starbucks, greige home decor, and making snarky jokes with my bestie. I’ve even inherited a stalker from an ill-advised singles party.
Yeah, the stalker is… a problem, one I’m hoping will just go away if I ignore it.

I can’t ignore
him, though.
He’s all broad shoulders and snide comments, picking apart everything about me as he circles me, going for the kill.
He would never fire me, though. There’s no fun in that. He wants me to quit, to have a mental breakdown.
Well, he can get in line behind my crazy gold-digging sister, my guilt-tripping mother, and the aforementioned stalker.

He pins me with his gaze.
I brace myself, waiting for the verbal blow to come…
Instead, he says, “I need a date tonight, and unfortunately, it has to be you.”

This is a full-length, enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy, complete with smokin’ hot-but-morally gray heroes, a smidge of suspense, and of course the perfect happily ever after!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Healthy but Fun

If this was really life, it would be littered red flags but you read the description, you knew that. The characters are phenomenal. Both characters are proven right which is so satisfying. Plus normally I don't like it when the female makes a patently dumb decision but in this instance it was so much fun to see how Salinger would escalate.

My one complaint is that they never acknowledge the fact that he and his brother's are named after authors

4.0 out of 5 stars Too long and drawn out.

Although this book was a decent read the book is really long and drawn out I skipped over half of it because it was just too much.

Alina sent the first few chapters in her newsletter and I was hooked. Emotional support corgi? Yes please. So when the preorder popped into my app, I was only going to read a little… lies. It was lies, I binge read it in 6 hours instead of sleeping.

I think this was the most mature (but still psycho levels of drama) Svensson book I’ve read. All the spice, pet love, real problems, and legitimate emotional turmoil. Mandy was relatable, independent, and believed in practical shoes.

Plus, I also have a dog who’s been fired from a few groomers.

I absolutely loved this book, although I did get extremely frustrated at times with Mandy’s choices and reasoning. Things escalated a lot due to her stubbornness. I absolutely adored Pepper and Salinger’s protectiveness of her.

I kind of guessed the twists somewhat early, but the ride was so amusing and really made me smile and made my day on a day I really needed that. I couldn’t put it down and I laughed out loud many times! Thank you for the smiles and laughs that I needed!

3.0 out of 5 stars I didn’t stop reading it…

I liked this book enough to binge read it but I wish the main female character stood up for herself all the time instead of just when trading snarky barbs with the main male character. It’s like she had two very different personalities. I mean, I would exhaust all routes if I needed to get rid of a stalker that was trying to get rid of my dog and rape me but that’s just me I guess. The author did a good job of portraying chaotic family dynamics because I definitely felt attacked trying to keep pace in the scenes that featured interactions with the copious number of family members. I’m glad that the MMC didn’t spend the majority of the book trying to convince himself that he didn’t like the FMC. Also, the dog kind of got on my nerves. I love dogs but I felt bad for this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute Stand-Alone Romance...with a dog!
Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2024
This is a cute stand-alone romance between a jerk of a boss and his no-nonsense assistant. Though labeled enemies-to-lovers, the tension is more antagonist-to-lovers. Mandy is Salinger's go-to assistant and even though he can be quite rude, their goals for the company to succeed are the same. There are quirky side characters in Mandy's corgi, her Gran, her sisters, and her best friend. Salinger has quite a few brothers who all share similar good looks, sizable egos, and successful businesses. There are two short chapters filled with a lot of dialogue which felt monotonous mostly because I had to go back a few times to clarify who was speaking. Otherwise, the story was delightful. There was small internal and a large external conflict effecting their relationship with an eventual yet logical happy ending. I like that even when they do finally get together, Mandy still give him a hard time!.

I received a free copy of this book via Cherrylily ARCs and am voluntarily leaving a review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, not a doormat female

I've read almost all of Alina Jacobs books, but there's a couple I couldn't finish because I was too irritated with the main characters.
I love snarky humor especially with a growly grumpy alpha man. I don't like when everyone around the main female is a bully and she just keeps taking it.
In this story, Mandy snaps back a lot to her boss and her sisters. I loved it! Can't wait for more!

The banter between these two was spot on but the funniest is Gran! This book just flowed from the first page and I could not put it down! Family gathering like this are very familiar….pure chaos! Please say Crawford is next ????
