About this item

From the Amazon Charts and New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow Box and Last Day comes a breathtaking thriller about a family shaken by lies, vengeance, and a cold-blooded crime.

A fierce blizzard is burying the eastern seaboard, but on the icy Rhode Island shore renowned artist Maddie Morrison finds warm sanctuary from a contentious divorce at the legendary Ocean House. Hours later, her body is found buried under a blanket of snow and her little daughter, CeCe, has disappeared without a trace.

For Detective Conor Reid; his brother, Tom, a coast guard commander; and Maddie’s grieving sister, Hadley, the posh hotel becomes ground zero for an investigation. Trapped by the blizzard, they must hunker down and determine who in the young mother’s life could have possibly wanted her dead. There are stories of a twisted romantic past. Of old jealousies and resentments that still cut to the bone. And a history of greed, rage, and revenge that created the perfect storm for murder. A storm that has just begun.

5.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing murder mystery!

Last Night is an intriguing mystery where everyone is suspect. A murder is committed and a young child is missing. There just happens to be an out-of-town police officer on the premises of the hotel where the victim was found buried in a snowfall during a raging storm.

The authorities are unable to do very much with the storm and snow still falling heavily preventing them from finding any evidence. The out-of-town officer does what he can to assist the local police and manages to find more evidence than they do as he slowly pieces together a few items that he found buried in the snow near the victim’s body.

The suspects increase and so does the mystery creating an enjoyable read. I like the writing style of this author and look forward to more of her work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Little Murder Mystery

I think this is the first book I've read from this author. It was a nice little read. I'm hoping that it wasn't supposed to be a thriller or something else because it was a pleasant book to read. It was nicely paced and went between the characters easily. I didn't try to figure out who did it very hard, but the ending was a bit of a surprise. I'm not sure about procedure for Coast Guard or law enforcement, so I'm not going to quibble about that. All in all, A nice mystery for a weekend read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Story but not Believable

I enjoyed the story of this book, but found it to be convoluted and not believable. It was too hard to follow the reveal.
SPOILERS! And the opening scene of the story, that a woman would take her six-year-old child out in a blizzard for the purpose of her art, was just ludicrous. Add to that that another character "didn't even think to let her know" that he wasn't going to meet her after all, which is even MORE unbelievable. People today text each other nonstop, and he just cancelled on her without a word, because he assumed she would know the meet was off due to the blizzard? Wouldn't happen!
I almost stopped reading because I can't handle a child being subjected to fear and trauma in the guise of entertainment, but I kept at it.
And I agree with other reviewers who thought the ending was sappy. There is no way they would all be so close. For one thing, everyone just loves CeCe, but she wasn't even there for much of the story, having been kidnapped. Why would she feel such attachment to these strangers, and they to her? (Other than the normal affection that we all feel for children)
This book had good potential, but didn't quite live up to it.

Luanne Rice never disappoints. Last night is the best book Ive read in a long time. I latched on to it from the first page. There were more twist and turns than most mystery books. You think you’ve got it figured out, then…. No that’s not right. Great book.

I thought this book was fantastic! I really couldn’t put it down for long from the time I started reading it until I finished it just now. The story was perfectly put together with no loose ends and the plot played out terrifically.

4.0 out of 5 stars at times, a little hard to follow!

Overall, a good story. I feel the narrative involving CeCe was a little over the top for a character who was depicted as 6 years old. It just made her seem to wise. There were lots of characters in the story. Too many. I still don’t know how some of them fit in. The plot, itself, was interesting. My thoughts on the “who, how & why” continually changed. I guess that’s why I gave it 4 stars instead of 3.
