A Washington Post and Sun Sentinel Best Book of the Year

“Cunning. . . . Get ready to be led down the garden path to a conclusion so morally ambiguous a professional ethicist might have to be called in.”  — Washington Post

From Alafair Burke—New York Times bestselling author of the runaway hit, The Wife— comes another twisty tale of domestic noir. When a prominent Manhattan lawyer is murdered, two estranged sisters—one the dead man’s widow, the other his ex—must set aside mistrust and old resentments ... but can they escape their past?

Keep your enemies close and your sister closer.

Though Chloe was the younger of the two Taylor sisters, she always seemed to be the one in charge. She was the honor roll student with big dreams and an even bigger work ethic. Nicky—always restless and more than a little reckless—was the opposite of her ambitious little sister. She floated from job to job and man to man, and stayed close to home in Cleveland.

For a while, it seemed that both sisters had found happiness. Chloe earned a scholarship to an Ivy League school and moved to New York City, where she landed a coveted publishing job. Nicky married promising young attorney Adam Macintosh and gave birth to a baby boy they named Ethan. The Taylor sisters became virtual strangers.

Now, more than fifteen years later, their lives are drastically different—and Chloe is married to Adam. When he’s murdered by an intruder at the couple’s East Hampton beach house, Chloe reluctantly allows her teenage stepson’s biological mother—her estranged sister, Nicky—back into her life. But when the police begin to treat Ethan as a suspect in his father’s death, the two sisters are forced to unite . . . and to confront the truth behind family secrets they have tried to bury in the past.

I got the ebook. Totally worth it for six hours of total entertainment! (I'm a fast reader, your mileage may vary!) Alifair never fails to toss in twists and turns that can leave you a little breathless, like going five miles faster than recommended while driving in the Appalachian two lane roads. Her character have humanity, characters are developed and treated kindly, and with integrity. An excellent read with a twisty, "I did not see that coming!" ending!

The Better Sister by Alafair Burke is an intriguing and engaging book. Once I started it, I only stopped to sleep. It is a fast-paced novel with believable characters and a well-crafted storyline.
If you enjoyed Burke's previous books, I feel confident that you will like this. In the event that she is a " new to you author," I encourage you to read this book as well as a few of her previous works. I especially enjoyed Angel's Tip and 212, books in her Ellie Hatcher series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but unrelatable main character

I liked the book and it was well written. I could not bring myself to rate it more than 3 stars because I could not stand the main character, Chloe. At first, I thought maybe that was intentional on the author's part but after finishing the book I realize it was not. Chloe was such a tremendous braggart. I could not stand her. A third of the way in, I was so sick of hearing how influential and famous she was. It was a good storyline, though, so I finished it. I didn't regret it, but Chloe didn't get any better.

My Thoughts: I was caught up in the family story of The Better Sister, wondering what secrets would be unveiled after Adam’s murder. Was Ethan guilty, or was some other family member or friend responsible for the murder?
I liked how the author portrayed the court room scenes, and also how we slowly began to see the deceptions that kept the sisters apart, not trusting each other. When the sisters began to come together in their efforts to protect Ethan, we finally learned the hidden truths. A page turner that earned 4.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALAFAIR BURKE HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!!!
Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2019
The thing I love about Alafair Burke's books is she always amazes me with a sudden twist taking the reader in a total different direction in her endings. She does that with The Better Sister in such a way that completely shocked me. I ended up suspecting three different people of being guilty before the final chapter. This story is full of deceit and love of two sisters, their husband, who marries one and has a child with her and later takes the child away by claiming she is unfit to care for him because of her drug addiction and moves away. He eventually marries the other sister who is a celebrity publisher and awesome stepmom to his son. Years later the husband is murdered and the sixteen year old son is arrested and goes to trial, which brings his mom, the other sister, to town to support her sister and him during the trial. Ms Burke brings the reader to a don't put the book down until the last word ending with several twists before she is done. If you don't have this book run out and get a copy right now.
