About this item

What could be worse than having a one-night stand with my twin’s biggest rival on the ice?
Umm…nothing.
Nothing is worse than that.
It’s the reason why my brother can never find out that I hooked up with Maverick McKinnon, ridiculously hot defenseman for the Western Wildcats. It doesn’t matter if the memories from our night together are enough to make my toes curl and my panties—
Well, you get the idea.
He’s the first guy to come along and not treat me like I’ll shatter into a million pieces when he lays his hands on me. Even if there’s a teeny tiny part within that would like to see him again, the fallout would be brutal.
I have enough to deal with. Like trying to break out of the box my family has placed me in since my diagnosis.
The only problem?
I’ve lost something valuable.
Something I need back.
And I’m pretty sure whose bed I’ll find it in.

Jennifer Sucevic just keeps raising the bar and then shattering it to pieces! Every time I finish her latest book, I quite literally say to myself that there's no way she can surpass that book, there's just no way. And there's no way that she can oust my favorite books of hers or characters with a new favorite.... yet, here we are - AGAIN! Maverick and Willow just landed in my top 5 favorite Jennifer Sucevic characters and this book just landed in my top 3 favorite of Jennifer's books. No joke! And for those not in the know, that is HUGE!!

For full disclosure, I have read every single one of Jennifer's books - and many of them multiple times. I love her stories, characters and the worlds she's crafted. And so yes, I do have my very own special "Jennifer Sucevic grading scale" and that is what this book is being judged against. And let me tell you, that's a tough scale to climb, let alone oust other books from their deep seated positions in the top spots. Yet, as I mentioned above, here we are - yet again! With every book, she sets that bar impossibly high and then she comes in and just shatters it! I'm awestruck by her - yet I shouldn't be surprised at this point. Because she does it every time.

And then she blows in here with Maverick and Willow. We've seen glimpses of Maverick for a while now, especially in his sister Juliette and her boyfriend Ryder's book. So we think we know the man, but lemme tell you that we do not know him. What is it about the surly, slightly grumpy, alpha male who is all growly and possessive? Doesn't it just do it for you every time? It appears it does it for me every time, especially if Jennifer is the one writing the MMC. And Maverick... hang on, I need to spritz my face with ice water for a minute. The man is fire embodied. I was totally taken by surprise because I thought for sure I knew what to expect with him knowing the little bit about him and then from the description of this book. But I was sadly unprepared for the depths of Maverick McKinnon. Sure he's a big-time alpha male and a hot shot on the Wildcats hockey team, but he's much much more. And as the layers get folded back, you find yourself falling harder and harder... and so hard. Like faceplant on the cement sidewalk hard - that's how hard. And the fact that he might just be teetering on the pleasure-dom side... I mean, is it just me or is there a touch of that in addition to his he-fall-first and touch-her-and-di& vibes? I'm here for all of them, btw. .... ohhhh how I'm here for all of them.

Then we've got Willow who has her own unique story and I love her so much. She's such an incredible character who is smart, kind, beautiful, and a survivor. I admire her so much for her strength and humanity. We get to witness her reclaiming her strength and life, and finding her way to living again and attempting to teach those closest to her to live life to its fullest. She's a beautiful soul. And she's so well matched with Maverick who needs a little sunshine in his life. (See what I did there?)

This story is just fire and chapters 7-9 just about did me over. Hoooooly moooooly. Can I get some more of that? Throw all the chili pepper emojis here because they deserve to be here. 10 million chili peppers along with 10 billion stars for my *gasp* new favorite Jennifer Sucevic book. Yes, yes, I said it. I do believe this is my favorite Jennifer book.... and I'm in shock about it.

Don't misunderstand, I'm not upset about this, but at the same time I am for the fact that I so deeply love so many of her stories and characters that it physically pains me when I have to oust one of my favs to make room for a new fav. (Don't mind me while I quietly sob in a corner). But then I love the new favs so hard that that almost hurts too. And from the very first sentence of this book, I knew that I was going to love Willow and Maverick so fierce, so much so that I dreaded the end of this book. I don't want to leave this world of these two characters. I want more of them together with their 10 million chilis, with Maverick's possessive and demanding side mixed with Willows beauty and grace, along with all of their cast of characters. I just need so much more...

And now starts the waiting game all over again - yes, I am a demanding Jennifer Sucevic fan because she doesn't churn these books out fast enough. (I'm sorry but you don't, I want so many more books - but hone your craft and keep doing you because whatever you're doing, it's working! ... but just ... I want more stories! *whines*) I recognize she spends MONTHS writing each story so carefully, only for me to devour them in less than a day - and you bet your bottom dollar that I stayed up until the wee hours of the night to finish each delectable word in this book. 10 billion stars for Maverick and Willow with 10 million chilis. <3

Maverick sees Willow and wants her but for one because of her connection to River his rival. He and Willow hook up for one night but he has no real idea who she really is to River. I liked that we see the characters from the previous books. Willow and Maverick while they are getting close are still not being honest with each other. Nor is she being honest with her brother River about Maverick. It does have a happy ending

Jennifer Sucevic's Mine to Take: A Brother's Rival, One Night Stand New Adult Sports Romance (Western Wildcats Hockey Book 5) is about Western College hockey defenseman Maverick Mckinnon and Willow Thompson, who happens to be his arch rival's twin sister. When rival East Town College has a hockey game at Western, Maverick, and Willow first have a "moment" as their eyes connect in the arena when he looks up after knocking River into the boards and sees her wearing River's jersey. Maverick assumes Willow is either a puck bunny or River's girlfriend. River and Willow go to the Western college's hangout Slap Shotz after their win over Western. While at the hockey hangout, River warns off any action initiated by his teammates toward Willow by not just saying that she is his sister and to stay away but that she has had cancer. Willow's brother's actions hurt Willow so much that she ducked out of the bar and had a run-in with Maverick Mckinnon, who convinced her to go home with him for the night. Maverick and Willow felt a soul-deep connection that neither felt with anyone else. Due to this, they pine for each other. Maverick needed to raise his Statistics grade or get benched, and he would not be allowed to play hockey. Willow fills in for her friend assigned to tutor Maverick as a student. Tutoring Maverick sets their love story in motion as they begin to fall for one another. Maverick's mom is a breast cancer survivor, so he has deeply embedded fears of losing her in his psyche.
On the other hand, Willow feels smothered by her germaphobe mother and overprotective dad and brother. Willow is afraid to reveal her cancer, even if she is in remission, and only wants to live her best life. There is no way she wants to indicate that River Thompson is her twin since their rivalry began when River stole Maverick's high school girlfriend away. How they maneuver through the sludge of college life with a budding relationship is quite a story that leaves one loving their romance with a guaranteed HEA and no cheating. Jennifer Sucevic's books are all five-star reads.

This book was off the charts amazing and gave me everything I love from hockey/brother’s rival to mistaken identity and the spice (chef’s kiss) but also ticked off all the boxes for my emotions with the cancer and even with the dyslexia. There was instant chemistry between the Maverick and Willow and I absolutely loved them together. Might be my fav Wildcat couple. Willow had cancer and the word that she tries desperately to stress is “had” but they all treat her like a fragile piece of glass that will break if the wind blows wrong and she is frustrated by her family with their overprotected nature and her mom with being all psycho about germs. She wants to live her life and not in fear of the potential for the cancer to come back. Maverick sees Willow at the hockey game wearing River’s jersey and he hates River with a passion as they have a massive rivalry. He thinks she is River’s girlfriend and ends up hooking up with her one night after the game not because he is trying to get one on River but because he is massively attracted to this girl but he never could have imagined that she is River’s twin sister. Maverick really wants to know who the mystery girl is and Willow is trying to avoid him as she does know who Maverick is and he is known for being a playboy but also tends to hold a grudge and comes off as grumpy.
