Delicate Escape by Catherine Cowles was a beautiful and captivating small-town romance with romantic suspense and I devoured it. Narrated by Erin Mallon and Teddy Hamilton, they truly brought Shep and Thea to life for me. This one had the following tropes, hidden identity, woman on the run, touch her and die vibes, and amazing found family. Our heroes, Shep and Thea were wonderful characters that I loved from the start. Shep just stole my heart. One of my top favorite heroes ever. He had golden retriever vibes in all the best ways and he fell, and fell hard, first and I just love that. He was protective, caring and patient. Thea had been scared for so long, she lived in a bubble. What is she running from? She was stronger than she knew and I loved that about her. She was cautious and vulnerable, but also caring and sweet.

I cannot express how much I enjoued Delicate Escape. This is book two in the Sparrow Falls series and can be read as a standalone, however, I loved book one and highly recommend it as well. It was such a great story. We learn early on Thea is running from something, not a spoiler, it’s in the blurb. She generally keeps to herself, but when the local contractor and co-worker’s brother offers to help her when she desperately needs it, can she say no? Trusting does not come easily for Thea, but something about Shep makes her feel safe for the first time in a long time.

Shep is drowning with guilt over things that have happened and he had no control over. There are also times he does not feel worthy, but he was one of the best man I have read about. I absolutely loved his character so much. He was determined to be patient with her and be what she needs. I loved their interactions so much and just devoured their journey. I am going to admit it, if this author writes it, I will read it. She has become an author I read, always, but this one was one of her best to-date and I highly recommend it.

Slow burn, suspenseful love story

Another excellent book in the Sparrow Falls series! Shep and Thea's story was compelling from the beginning, picking up where the first book in this series ended. Shep is in a bad place mentally, coming off the recent events involving his sister, which has him doubting himself, and resenting his "golden boy" reputation in Sparrow Falls. Thea is running from a dangerous ex, and has been living off the grid and building a new life in town. The build up of their relationship is slow and delicate- Thea is skittish and untrusting of most people so Shep works hard to show her that he can be trusted with her heart. This is a sweet, he falls first, sloooow burn love story. Other tropes include found family (Shep's family is mix of bio and adopted children, some of whom, like Shep, came from difficult circumstances), suspense, and golden retriever MMC. TW for emotional abuse in a relationship (not between the MCs).

I can't wait for the next installment of this series! There were some bread crumbs involving Shep's siblings, that have me super excited for their stories!

The perfect literary, romantic suspense escape

We're back in the small town of Sparrow Falls, Oregon with the second book in Catherine Cowles's series that shares the same name as the town and focuses on the Colson siblings. Delicate Escape pairs Shepard Colson, the second eldest among the siblings at thirty-four, the first to be adopted, and the owner of Colson Construction, with Thea Stewart, a resident of Sparrow Falls the past two years and who works at both The Mix Up and Bloom & Berry, the local bakery and nursery, respectively. Shep has been fascinated with Thea from the moment he first saw her, but she's maintained her distance in their interactions, seemingly immune to the golden boy charm other women swoon over. Then issues with her home force her to accept help--Shep's help. With every bit of ground he breaks and each wall he takes down around Thea's house, Shep builds a formidable foundation in his blossoming relationship with her. But the past continues to loom in the shadows, and it could be waiting to remind Thea that there's no escaping it.

Over the years, I've found that Catherine Cowles's books hit the spot whenever I'm itching for well-written romantic suspense set in small towns. She doesn't skimp on either the romance or the suspense, which is just how I like it. The fact that her novels tend to be part of a series or are interconnected make it even better because then I'm able to follow a cast of characters through several books. With the Colsons in the Sparrow Falls series, Cowles has given readers an interesting set of siblings--two of whom are the biological children of the parents, and four who were fostered or adopted at varying ages. The family dynamic is fascinating, particularly between two of the siblings, but I'm waiting to see if my theory is right or wrong on that as the series moves forward. Each sibling has a protective streak, and Shep's is on full display when it comes to Thea. He's also very nurturing and supportive, encouraging her to trust and be the strong person he knows she actually is. There was so much growth with Thea! I couldn't help but root for her and wish ill will on her evil ex. The twist? I didn't see it coming, which is a good thing. I love it when an author manages to catch me off guard. Five stars go to Delicate Escape and three months till book three!
