About this item

Can an ordinary guy make extraordinary choices in a battle between humanity and unearthly evil?

Joe Mandel is a perfectly ordinary guy from a perfectly ordinary town—a college student and community volunteer who dreams of one day publishing a novel. When a series of strange intuitions leads him to a crime in progress, Joe jumps headlong into danger without hesitation. In the aftermath, he wonders about the uncanny impulse that suddenly swept over him.

Until new friend Portia Montclair, the strangely wise daughter of the local police chief, explains to him what sent him ricocheting around town like a crazy pinball. Portia tells of another reality, a reality more thrilling—and terrifying—than Joe ever imagined. Timeless, elemental forces of good and evil have come to the quiet town of Little City: a cosmic entity capable of infecting human beings, and the seeker who has chosen Joe to find it.

To stop the malevolent invader, this average Joe must be braver than he ever thought possible…and face the hardest decisions of his life.

The author of more than one hundred novels, Dean Koontz has sold more than 500 million copies and been published in thirty-eight languages. Fourteen novels have risen to number one on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list. Koontz’s 2003 thriller Odd Thomas was adapted into the 2013 film, one of many film adaptations of his work. Koontz was born and raised in Pennsylvania and graduated from Shippensburg University. He lives in Southern California with his wife, Gerda, and their golden retriever, Elsa.

American oddball illustrator and designer Oliver Barrett grew up in Ohio on a steady diet of science fiction, role-playing games, and below-average athletics. He cut his teeth working as an art director at advertising and branding agencies before setting off on his own to make his mark on the world. This background set the stage for a career of clever concepts, frenetic line work, and engaging imagery that’s sought after by the Nikes, Amazons, and Netflixes of the globe, to name a few. He can also deadlift almost four hundred pounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one really needs a sequel, even though it's not necessarily a cliffhanger.

It's very interesting, and a great short story. I'd expect nothing less from Dean Koontz, and was not disappointed. I was a little bit surprised by the ending, and would love to read more (full-length) stories about Ricochet Joe.

The moving artwork in the ebook was also interesting, captivating, and very innovative, but I wouldn't miss it if it wasn't included.

A little to “Odd Thomas” for me. I have to write thirteen words, what a pain in the ass. Period

3.0 out of 5 stars A somewhat enjoyable short thriller

`Ricochet Joe` was a somewhat entertaining short thriller read, but nothing too impressive. The theme is nothing original and it lacks some elements of plausibility, but the book isn't boring. As a free short book (~1.5 hours), I don't regret reading it, but it didn't make me want to explore more the author or the story.

The storyline is a mix of fantasy and bildungsroman, playing upon themes like good vs. evil, quantum theory and parallel universes mixed with magic. While the story is decently complete in itself, due to it's shortness it barely touches upon it's themes; but the book could be the opening of a series. The subjects are a little too complex for such a short book.

I borrowed this as Single Kindle and it also had the Audible narration (for free). The reading experience from my smartphone was fine, but the narrator voice and tone was borderline boring. I don't pay too much attention on Kindle Motion animations, but they were decently good quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction for an epic saga series, but not satisfying as a stand-alone story. The humor is delightful.

I've been a Koontz fan ever since his early effort "The Haunted Earth" over 50 years ago. Most Koontz books get an automatic "5 Stars", but a few of his in the last 10 years or so are great writing, but the plots simply do not grab me. Even so, I downrate "Ricochet Joe" as a book simply because it is not a standalone story. As an introduction to a whole new epic saga, it is very good, but not satisfying by itself. "Odd Thomas" was of course a similar intro, but it could stand alone as a great story on its' own merit. His recent full-length novel about the Hawaiian girl showed a similar weakness, but viewed as the first entry of a new series, I loved it.

"Watchers" is, of course, my mandatory favorite. After that, my taste points to "Dark Rivers of the Heart". But when I'm simply looking for a relaxing fun read, "Tick Tock" is my go-to Koontz story. "Ricochet Joe" has strong echoes from "Tick Tock" in its' unmistakable Koontzian humor. For now, that is its' greatest strength - I absolutely LOVE it ! I have great hopes for a long series of sequels.

Now this one was truly awesome!!! I just wish the villain had more illustration so I could see if my picture even came close to the description. I hate that wisdom had to die because evil invaded it. And, if the hero left a part of himself behind to live life he wanted but said he lost, does that take away from him or what??? I'm confused. I thought for sure this would have ended with a heroic traveling couple, possibly with the dog on more parasite hunting adventures... Awesome!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Good read if bought for less than 2 usd

A pretentious and complex novella. It is entertaining for a moment and for a low cost it is ok. However, i did not like it. Let me explain. It is a book that tries to innovate with aspects such as the concept of time, evil, moral dillema and such. But it tries to deal with all of this in a novella format (or even short story) so it does not feels detailed and it is difficult to understand (some things have to be read twice to understand what happened). Hence the pretentious. It tries to grab more that what could be easily covered in that size. Hence the complex. But on the same time it feels simple, gullible, predictable and basic at some other times where pace is slow and uninteresting. It spends about 30 to 40% on a guy picking garbage with a weird experience and then having ice cream with some girl. quite slow. And then all of the supernatural stuff and action stuff is really packed in very fast. And time travel and stuff like that appears unexplained.

If the books cost less than 2 bucks go ahead, it is not a bad read. More than that, it is not worth it.
