About this item

Opposites attract in this modern-day fairytale when American, Sophie MacKnight, inherits a Scottish castle along with a hot grumpy Scotsman who is tasked with training her to be a magickal knight before the Kelpies wreak havoc on the people of Loren Brae.

The knight was supposed to be a man.

Not me, Sophie MacKnight, a marketing associate from California.

This must be a practical joke that the Scots play on visiting Americans. Because otherwise I’ve inherited a haunted castle in Scotland, along with one irritatingly sexy Scotsman, who would be delighted if I turned tail and ran.

Frankly, I thought I would fly here, sell the heap of bricks, and head back home to a life that I…well, I was comfortable with at the very least. Instead, the people of Loren Brae are in trouble, and it appears that as the new owner of the castle, I’m next in line to reinstate the magickal Order of Caledonia. Which means, first, I have to learn to believe in magick. And secondly, I have to train to become a knight.

And my trainer? None other than Lachlan Campbell, the grumpiest man I’ve ever had the annoyance of meeting. It’s a toss-up who is pricklier, Lachlan, or his kilted Chihuahua, Sir Buster. Not only does Lachlan think that I can’t hack it, but he also resents my claim on his castle.

If only he didn’t look so devastatingly hot in his kilt.

Now, I’m stuck proving myself to him, all while trying to figure out how to help my new friends in Loren Brae.

Sparks fly as our swords meet, and we battle our rising attraction for each other.

Who will win in this (Highland) game of love?

I loved this opposites attract, fish out of water romance. The storyline was fun and imaginative, the characters were likable and relatable, and the writing was addictive, all drawing the reader into this magical world. I fell directly into the story on page one and only looked up after the last word. It was filled with all the emotions, the connections and the love. Lachlan is the caretaker of MacAlpine Castle in Loren Brae Scotland. He is a grumpy Scot who does not believe in the myths that his village is steeped in. Sophie lives in California and spent her teenage years living with her eccentric Scottish uncle and his 7th wife. When her uncle dies, she inherits the Castle in Scotland with some specific requirements. Sophie does not just inherit the Castle, she also has become the first Knight of the Order of the Caledonia and is tasked with protecting Clach na Fìrinn in Loren Brae. As Sophie her Knight “training” and completes her three tasks, she and Lachlan become closer. To get to their HEA and for Sophie to become the Knight, there will be baggage unpacking, leaps of faith, and fear conquering. I am looking forward to reading more in this series. 4.5 stars.

This is a quick read and can be a welcomed distraction for anyone who needs something lightheaded. Quirky and somewhat predictable, the story has a unique and mythical twist. I enjoyed the banter between the locals and the characters were interesting and engaging. Being from the UK myself, I noticed that the author mixed in some Irish (fecking eejit) and Welsh (boyo) terms into the dialogue, which Scottish people wouldn’t ordinarily use. Other than that, the story was fun and worth the read.

I had to force myself to put this book down to sleep. Fast paced it fully drew me in by page two. Delightful characters are wonderfully flawed and loveable. Add to a great storyline the complete lack of my pet peeve which is mounds of unnecessary words. YAY!

The characters are believable, though the situation requires a level of suspension of disbelief... Clyde is awesome! And fearsome as they may be, I love the idea of kelpies, especially protective ones.
I would have loved to know Arthur, and hope everyone has someone like him! Sophie has a heart of gold, and the things she faces, people she meets, and the love she has are great reading.

This was my first book by this author, though she's been on my radar recently, and I'm really glad I plucked it out of my out-of-control TBR pile to read. I absolutely adored this book, finishing it overnight, and pausing only long enough to get the rest of the series.

Great world building, great characters, great setting, mystery, suspense, romance, humor...this book had everything I look for in a great story. It even had a small dog with a big attitude that reminded me a great deal of one of my own fur babies, lol.

All the stars, and I have a new author to binge read.

This story focuses on more of the couple, Sophie and Lachlan, than the Magick or the order. In this book, Sophie, the workaholic, learns to love herself and open herself up to love. Lachlan learns to embrace the Magick of the land and not fear love. There is some steam and a wonderful cast of secondary characters, but overall there are stronger Highland romances out there.

If you like internal dialog and a light sprinkel of Highland on your romance, this is a good book for you.

Sophie and Lachlan

The death of a beloved uncle leaves Sophie mourning, and in possession of a castle. The castle isn’t an ordinary bequest either, as Sophie finds herself dealing with a magical challenge, and a village in need of saving…

This is a quick read, and a fun romantasy tale, featuring a kilted highlander, and the American woman who is determined to bring him to his knees.
Star of the book is the hilariously grumpy, kilted, chihuahua Sir Buster, although Clyde the coo is probably second.
There are a few laugh out loud moments, and some steamy ones, but it’s all fun.
An enjoyable, entertaining read for the romantasy fan, or for the highland romance fan who doesn’t mind a little magic in their tales.
