About this item

After a year in captivity, a kidnapped child escapes—only to reveal horrific truths that lead her psychologist on a race against time in this thriller from New York Times bestselling author Mike Omer.

When eight-year-old Kathy Stone turns up on the side of the road a year after her abduction, the world awaits her harrowing story. But Kathy doesn’t say a word. Traumatized by her ordeal, she doesn’t speak at all, not even to her own parents.

Child therapist Robin Hart is the only one who’s had success connecting with the girl. Robin has been using play therapy to help Kathy process her memories. But as their work continues, Kathy’s playtime takes a grim turn: a doll stabs another doll, a tiny figurine is chained to a plastic toy couch. All of these horrifying moments, enacted within a Victorian doll house. Every session, another toy dies.

But the most disturbing detail? Kathy seems to be playacting real unsolved murders.

Soon Robin wonders if Kathy not only holds the key to the murders of the past but if she knows something about the murders of the future. Can Robin unlock the secrets in Kathy’s brain and stop a serial killer before he strikes again? Or is Robin’s work with Kathy putting her in the killer’s sights?

It has a great storyline and I love the character development. The therapy techniques were quite spot on. It’s good to know that everyone received a happy ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Almost Did Not Finish It
Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2024
This book was a decent read, but I almost did not finish it because it seemed to be dragging along in the beginning. It took too many unnecessary turns. For example all of the day of the event recollections from different characters. Those were a waste of time and pages.

The storyline was good, but it took way too long to get to the point. I rarely go to the end of a book to see how everything turns out. In this case I did because the other alternative was to just put the book down and never return to it. I personally can’t bear the thought of starting something and not finishing it. So, going to the final few chapters saved this book for me. Those chapters made me want to go back and see how the suspect got to that final point.

It is a good read if you like suspense. Give it a try because everyone is different. I just prefer books that move along with so much intention, that you do not want to put it down. This one dragged along, but had some chapters that I actually read and didn’t skim through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than The Silent Patient

I read this entire book in 2 sessions in 2 days--which says everything you need to know.

But, if you need to know more: Please Tell Me is the story of Robin, a child therapist, helping a young girl heal from the trauma of being held captive for 18 months. She doesn't speak, but she communicates through playacting with little action figures--and she playacts horrible, graphic scenes of torture.

I loved the characters in Please Tell Me. Robin is a strong female lead, facing her own problems with a narcissistic mother, insomnia, a recent divorce, and being the center of the town gossip. Her stress kept accumulating, and I began to feel reallt bad for her as she just kind of... broke down.

The detective leading the case was my favorite. He is so upbeat and always in-tune to how other people feel, doing his best to cheer them up with witty banter or stories.

There are some other characters that are kind of disgusting people--but that's what makes this thriller so good. Not all the characters are likeable, just like how we all may have people in our lives that are narcissistic or money-hungry.

There is also a hint of romance between some characters while others' relationships are falling apart. It wasn't forced on me like some other romantic relationships are in thriller books. Rather, it complemented the storyline, and I was actually rooting for them.

But, there was a great balance between relationships and plot. Sometimes, it's too easy to focus on one, and the other gets neglected. But both aspects were thought out and well developed, so that even though there are a lot of characters, they all had a purpose moving the storyline for the main character.

This is how The Silent Patient should have been like, in which the reason for the young child not speaking is reasonable and extremely powerful. And, the book wasn't written solely for the plot twists.

The only downside is how many times it switches perspectives and time periods. It often switches between multiple characters--detectives, the therapist, the serial killer, the young girl's mom, etc--making some scenes difficult to follow.

An interesting but disturbing premise for a book. Loved Robin’s character. I did feel that the end got rushed a bit and tied up quickly with a bow. But overall, I definitely enjoyed it. Solid 3.8 out of 5.
