About this item
Jael Furyck doesn’t want a husband.
Daughter of the King of Brekka, trained as a warrior since she was ten-years-old, her plans have never involved marriage and motherhood. But when her father dies, her uncle steals the throne, and desperate to rid himself of the threat she poses, he plots to marry his troublesome niece to the son of Brekka’s arch enemy.
Eadmund Skalleson doesn’t want another wife.
He had a wife, who died, and broken-hearted, he sank into an ale pit of despair, no longer the renowned warrior he once was. Now, he is an embarrassment to his father, the King of the Slave Islands, who has finally run out of patience. The king has no love for the Brekkans, but an alliance with them, sealed with a marriage, has the potential to make him a wealthy man indeed.
Though as the rival kings scheme, an ancient darkness emerges from the shadows – an echo of the past – threatening to destroy Jael, Eadmund, and everyone they love.
Winter’s Fury is the first book in The Furyck Saga: a gripping six-part epic fantasy series set in a world of warring kingdoms, mysterious dreamers, and dark magic, where an ancient prophecy weaves a terrifying fate for them all...

Hooked!
Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2019
I am definitely enjoying this series. I am now on the third book and pretty hooked.
First, I will say what I like..
-The background of this story is a fictional world of people that I would say are something of a mix between Vikings and maybe Scotsman? They're war-hardened, living in a rough and harsh reality. So if that is your thing, you will like this book. It is believable, almost feels like an actual time in history of a land we don't know about.
-The dialogue is good, really good. I read some reviews that say the story is too slow-paced, but for me I found it enjoyable because the dialogue is good and real. There is no cringe-worthy conversations (my pet peeve) that you would never hear in real life. Also, I think the pace is definitely suitable because throughout the book (and the series), you're introduced to A LOT of characters and it takes time to get them know, but you are able to get to know them all and it's worth it. So much more to think about rather than just the MCs.
-The POV switches around constantly. But to me it isn't jarring, rather I feel like a fly on the wall who can read everyone's mind. And the stories move in a way that's almost cinematic, switching from "scene" to "scene".
-Lastly, plot is good, story is good, characters are relatable, likable, emotional..
Some other things...
- There is a lot of angst in these books... so once you start it, you really want to get through the book, but it also moves rather slowly
-This book is not stand alone.. the story continues in the sequels, so just be prepared to read more books to get the conclusion of the story.
- ***Note: there is sex and language in these books. I'm a reader that really dislikes unnecessary sex and profanity, but I will say the sex is not graphic or descriptive, and most often is not the focal point, rather is developmental to the story. There is quite a lot of profanity, including the F, S, B, C word, to mention a few, but because the book is mainly about war-hardened soldiers in war.. so it seems rather appropriate to me. There is also crude sexual language. Point being, in my opinion it is appropriate to the story, but probably not suitable for your small kid.

Great

I just love this series. The first book is actually quite eventful and quick paced but it doesn't compare to all that happens in the series. I've read some criticism of this series but I don't agree at all. I think it's well written in an easy but engaging way. I was never bored and the author tends to keep every chapter a page turner as she flits from one group of characters to the next, leaving you wanting to know what happens next every time. I found the characters very endearing and I believe the series gets better and better. I love this series and the other series that takes place in the same world with new characters, one continent away, The Lords of Alekka. Recommend highly. Great for YAs and adults alike.

A must read

Most books I read, switch off between characters from chapter to chapter. RAYNE has an absolutely incredible way of weaving everyone together, with out you being confused on who your reading about. I loved this reading style, I felt like I got to know the characters better this way. There are a lot of them and I really enjoyed being able to read each person's thoughts and feelings all in the same chapter instead of how most books are. I was really impressed with by how well the story flowed together this way and I am definitely obsessed. I like to buy audio as well with my books so I can listen when I'm doing things around the house and can't sit and read for awhile. I loved the audio version as much as reading it myself. If I could give this book 10 stars I totally would. It's a masterpiece all around. When I read fantasy books like this with so much detail I'm just amazed at how someone can imagine such a story. It's truly a talent to be extremely proud of.

I’m seriously glad I found this book!

This is a fantasy adventure that has romance, some humour and a good dose of mythology and battles, in other words it is a whole lot of fun wrapped in a good, long book. If you like books with complex worlds and different story lines being explored at the same time (all important and equally entertaining) I would say these novels in the Furyck saga are a very good choice. The quality of writing is above average as is the plot and this author’s creativity is immense, giving all the characters and specially the main ones like Jael a wealth of realism and depth that helps us readers love and root for or despise accordingly. Even the villains behaviour and desires have a logic to them you can easily understand. I absolutely recommend this title, give it a chance.

Pretty good.. the things that bothered me-and the only reason this didn't get 5 stars.. it feels like insta-love, I wish there were more building between the two.. and it is strange to constantly switch perspectives from one paragraph to the next. The story itself- loved it. Even the dialogue of how the characters talk make it feel like you're in Viking days. Fmc- love her!!!!

A good story, but I won’t continue with the series

Great characters with a well thought out plot, but I find these long winded series to be exhausting now. So much filler content, so much depth of thought from each character makes these books (and thus the series) just way too long. The action was done well here though, and doesn’t have the long winded blow by blow battle filler I see in some of these books. Just enough detail to be interesting there, but still too much inner thought content for me. Very talented author.

May I first say, this is the first time I’ve had the privilege to read a story from this author…Winter’s Fury is wonderful, thrilling & inspiring; her characters melt into your heart. As A. E. Rayne states in the last page about herself..I too “have a deep love of history and all things Viking.” I have now ordered all six of The Furyck Saga and am trying not to devour them to quickly, as I totally adore being immersed in this world!!! Thankyou A.E. Rayne, I look forward to reading every tale you write!!! Best wishes, Respectfully, S. Albright
