About this item

Mika is not your average twelve-year-old—and she’s about to prove it.

It’s 1880, and in the frigid city of Stockholm, death lurks around every corner. Twelve-year-old Mika knows that everyone in her orphanage will struggle to survive this winter. But at least the notorious serial killer the Night Raven is finally off the streets…or is he?

Mika is shocked when a newborn baby is left at the orphanage in the middle of the night, by a boy with a cryptic message. Who is he? And who is this “Dark Angel” he speaks of? When a detective shows up, Mika senses something even more sinister is going on.

Drawn in by Mika’s unique ability to notice small details—a skill Mika has always used to survive—the gruff Detective Hoff unwittingly recruits her to help him with his investigation into a gruesome murder. Mika knows she should stay far, far away, and yet…with such little hope for her future, could this be an opportunity? Maybe, just maybe, this is Mika’s chance to be someone who matters.

Mystery set in a cruel historical time period. The treatment of children orphaned is hard for me to understand. It was an intricate part of the story.

I liked the characters and loved the final pay day, it literally choked me up.

I rarely read middle grade, am glad this came to me, and I look forward to more from the author.

Set in the winter of Stockholm in 1880, Mika is an orphan living in a children’s home. The author does a fantastic job of setting the atmosphere of poverty, despair, and general cold winter. A murderer is on the loose and somehow tied to the baby recently dropped off at the orphanage. Mika becomes an unlikely ally to help solve the mystery surrounding the murder while enlisting allies of her own. She also finds that she has an interesting link to the baby. Interested to see how the next book goes! Quick cozy mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 12-year-old detective and brilliant strategist saves the day

Mika is an orphan with no last name. For survival, she has learned to notice details no one else notices, reminiscent of Monk or Colombo. As she reports to the police officer investigating the arrival of a newborn with no identification, her notice of details is written into the report about the man who left the infant. This leads to a detective contacting her for identifying a man in the morgue. As the detective learns more about Mika’s talents, he enlists her help in finding a notorious murderer who purportedly was executed some months ago. This is a girl who is amazingly resourceful in saving her life and the life of the detective as they work underground to solve a mystery the police chief doesn’t want publicized.

My 4th grade son liked this book. It was an easy read. However, for a book we read together, I thought it was boring (but didn’t share that with him).
The Graveyard Book & The Girl Who Drank the Moon were better choices for a parent/child book club.

I thoroughly enjoyed the truth of the situation with the very slimmest chance of hope. A story so removed from the current, day reality and yet it,isnt. I trust in the outcome.

Until reading the notes at the end. Very good story. Rather like Great Expectations, except Pip is a young girl. Who it turns out is very intelligent and strong. She risks her own life to protect the children in the orphanage. She impresses the police detective with her logical deciphering of the clues and her strong moral compass. Great heroine for the time line of the story.

Well put together story that highlights the often forgotten orphans in a century long gone.
Be ready for determination and courage.
