About this item

From Booker Prize Finalist and bestselling author of “pitch perfect” (Boston Globe) Small Things Like These, comes a triptych of stories about love, lust, betrayal, and the ever-intriguing interchanges between women and men.

Celebrated for her powerful short fiction, considered “among the form’s most masterful practitioners” (New York Times), Claire Keegan now gifts us three exquisite stories, newly revised and expanded, together forming a brilliant examination of gender dynamics and an arc from Keegan’s earliest to her most recent work.

In So Late in the Day, Cathal faces a long weekend as his mind agitates over a woman with whom he could have spent his life, had he behaved differently; in The Long and Painful Death, a writer’s arrival at the seaside home of Heinrich Böll for a residency is disrupted by an academic who imposes his presence and opinions; and in Antarctica, a married woman travels out of town to see what it’s like to sleep with another man and ends up in the grip of a possessive stranger.

Each story probes the dynamics that corrupt what could be between women and men: a lack of generosity, the weight of expectation, the looming threat of violence. Potent, charged, and breathtakingly insightful, these three essential tales will linger with readers long after the book is closed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great writing even if I didn't love all the stories

I was impressed with the skill of the writer. She has that business of "show don't tell" down pat. I'm reading along, trying to figure out where things were going, but really I'm just watching and observing the character. Then things slowly clarify, but not because the author explains it to me. Nicely done, and her eye for detail is superb. I loved the idea of distant waves "thumping" on the sand, for example. Because they do, but I never thought of it like that before.

I liked the first story because it was like showing us a guy who, like a lot of guys, is just trapped by his misogynistic upbringing. He's not happy but doesn't really think about it, beyond assuming it's probably because women are such C-words. And he'll die lonely and undeveloped for lack of serious introspection. An unexamined life. That really resonated!

The second one seemed to underscore that authors will get inspiration from a bad interaction, so you'd better treat them right or find yourself in their books, dying of cancer!

The third one was gruesome. The woman didn't resonate with me because, despite having a husband and kids, she just set out to have sex with a stranger...although I have to admit, I admired that she apparently saw life as that available to her, as something to grasp and enjoy, full stop. But then how could she not get worried about this guy? And the ending seemed like punishment for going after what she wanted. Moralistic, puritanical.

So that's my read on this read! I'm glad I read it, because Keegan is really skillful.

SO LATE IN THE DAY
Claire Keegan

Some of the stories start with him but they’re really all about her.

She promised to make a delicious apple tart
He thought he was in love
He proposed
They married.

She moved in
He paid for the apples
She baked the tart
It was a disaster.

He never really loved her anyway.

I hate paying for something I already read. I liked the first story but the second was just unpleasant and I've read the third before. Just didn't enjoy it, although she is a very good writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A commentary on the human condition in short story form.

So Late in the Day is a collection of three short stories featuring flawed, often relatable, characters. They are about the relationships of men and women and the consequences of the choices we make.

The first story shares its title with the book. Gender dynamics play a big role in this tale of a man whose own selfishness and poor behavior put him in his current situation. “That was part of the trouble: the fact that she would not listen, and wanted to do a good half of things her own way.”

The Long and Painful Death centers around a "writer in residence” living in a home donated to the writing program allowing writers to work without distractions. Burdened by her own expectations, many things distract the writer until, a strange man comes by claiming to be interested in the house.

In Antarctica, a wife and mother is curious to know what sex with another man might be like. While away for a weekend she meets a man, they share dinner and drinks and spend some time together. When it is time for her to leave, this stranger becomes very possessive of her and doesn’t want her to go.

All three stories are compelling and leave you wanting more. The subjects are weighty and the book lays bare the flaws of humankind. Keegan’s thought provoking content mix perfectly with her beautiful lyrical writing⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

2.0 out of 5 stars Teeny tiny book of 3 previously published stories for $17.99

Claire Keegan is a lovely writer. But this book is just over 100 pages, you can literally hold it in the palm of your hand and read it in an hour. Three stories that have been published elsewhere. Shame on Amazon for charging $17.99 for this, and shame on whoever decided to throw together three previously printed stories to make some money. They also overcharged for her previous book. I don't usually complain about the cost, especially when the writing is skillful, but this is a rip off.
