About this item

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the acclaimed author of The Longest Ride and The Notebook comes an emotional, powerful novel about wondering if we can change—or even make our peace with—the path we’ve taken.

“Sparks is superb at what he does. The setting is postcard perfect. The characters are immensely likable. . . . This is a tidy miracle you can count on.”—The Washington Post

Tanner Hughes was raised by his grandparents, following in his grandfather’s military footsteps to become an Army Ranger. His whole life has been spent abroad, and he is the proverbial rolling stone: happiest when off on his next adventure, zero desire to settle down.  But when his grandmother passes away, her last words to him are
find where you belong. She also drops a bombshell, telling him the name of the father he never knew—and where to find him.

Tanner is due at his next posting soon, but his curiosity is piqued, and he sets out for Asheboro, North Carolina, to ask around. He’s been in town less than twenty-four hours when he meets Kaitlyn Cooper, a doctor and single mom. They both feel an immediate connection; Tanner knows Kaitlyn has a story to tell, and he wants to hear it. To Kaitlyn, Tanner is mysterious, exciting—and possibly leaving in just a few weeks.

Meanwhile, nearby, eighty-three-year-old Jasper lives alone in a cabin bordering a national forest. With only his old dog, Arlo, for company, he lives quietly, haunted by a tragic accident that took place decades before. When he hears rumors that a white deer has been spotted in the forest—a creature of legend that inspired his father and grandfather—he becomes obsessed with protecting the deer from poachers.

As these characters’ fates orbit closer together, none of them is expecting a miracle . . . but that may be exactly what is about to alter their futures forever.

What a beautiful story of Gods love for us, even when we fell abandoned He is always there. All the people in the book are beautifully written and strong even though life has dealt them heartbreaking blows.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are feeling hopeless, battered or adrift read this story

I loved this book. It was a gift from heaven sent exactly when I needed it. If your life has been blessed with ease you might not appreciate it for what it holds....hope. And grace, and resilience that makes a person never give up. The spiritual world is just around the corner and sometimes we get a glimpse. If you haven't experienced that you may not fully appreciate this story. You are immersed in the setting, the characters have depth and the story reads like a parable. I have no doubt this story will make it to the screen and be a movie to inspire us all. It is a quick read but it worth it.

I found no real surprises in this book, other than exactly how Jasper and Tanner would be related. Each of the three stories (Jasper's, Tanner's and Kaitlyn's with her kids Mitch and Casey, were all well written and believable. I too believe that miracles do happen, and found the Bible verses intertwined with the book refreshing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicholas Sparks at his best!

I have been a fan of Sparks’ books since the Notebook. His last few books have been hit or miss for me. In my opinion this one is a big hit! The story line is compelling from page one. Yes, it contains the NS patented sad storyline, but the ending is worth it. As someone who is experiencing a “Job-ish” (from the Bible) life right now, it was exactly what I needed to read. Bravo Mr. Sparks!

I was so excited to get the opportunity to read Nicholas Sparks new novel in advance, as someone who owns and has read every one of his books. His writing was just as exquisite as always.

This book follows three stories, Tanner’s a military veteran, Jasper an elderly neighbor, and Kaitlyn with her two kids Casey and Mitch. It showcases the struggle with faith in God, struggles of life’s unimaginable things, and love.

I took a Star off, but would have only taken a half a star if we could rate in that way because of the lengths of the chapters, and how each one had parts. I never like to put a book down in the middle of a chapter, but reading this as an ebook, it told me how long it would take me to finish the chapter, and some said 55 minutes, and I like to read a bit before bed, but had to stop mid-chapter due to just being tired, but wanting to read more.

Tanner is in search of his father, that his grandmother let him know his name, city and state on her deathbed. Jasper is just trying to live his life in peace, having visits with his neighbors kid Mitch, teaching him how to Whittle. Kaitlyn is a doctor, divorcee and single mother of two (Mitch and Casey). Each of there stories twist into one another’s, without them even realizing it.

I loved this book and can’t wait to receive my pre-ordered hardcover on publishing day.
