About this item

When a romance author meets a mysterious stranger, love is the last thing she expects to find in a funny and heartfelt novel about second chances by a New York Times bestselling author.

A city girl leaves her life behind in LA to start over in a small town…

It’s a cliché, but it’s also Amelia Taylor’s life. And her new life as a romance novelist and motelier is going great—until Nathan Hart checks in.

Of course he’s disastrously handsome, thoroughly disagreeable, and seems to be set against Amelia on sight. Of course there’s smoldering tension between them that can’t be ignored. They’d make the perfect enemies to lovers story. It’s one of Amelia’s favorite tropes.

But the man in room 32 seems genuinely broken, and it’s going to take more than romance tropes and wishful thinking to get past his wounds. As a tentative friendship grows into a deeper connection, Amelia and Nathan both realize that facing each other’s painful secrets takes courage. Do they dare take the risk and hope it ends happily after all?

5.0 out of 5 stars Maisey Yates took a modern romance novel to a whole other level in Happily After All

I never saw it coming. I was turned inside out by this funny, emotional and one hundred percent relatable story. It uncovers every aspect of the human condition. The way the author introduces each character lets you get to know them slowly, almost personally. Through twists and turns in her sub plots, the characters become more complex, more real, and more like your friends than just people described in black and white. There are moments where you will be smiling and laughing due to quirky moments and in the next few pages, the story will leave tears welting up in your eyes. Everyone in this book has a story to tell you, stories that will make you love every single one of them as if they were your own personal friends. The emotions that Maisey covers are real and relatable. They are so deep that you can’t help but drift off into your own stories that are alike. The character connections you will make while reading this book will blow your mind. What a refreshing well written story that has so much more than just the typical romance plot to it! I had trouble putting it down because it had so many emotions that I could personally connect to. If your genre is romance, but you’re looking for a different style, then this is your book. You’ll definitely find something in this book that makes you feel the same kind of way as the characters. I loved it so much that I wanted more and was almost sad that it came to an end. I highly recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked how this was structure out

    4.5 stars

I have read Maisey Yates for years and years with her category and cowboy romances and this was my foray into something different from her. This felt very much like a rom com that I have read in the past, but it did have some Maisey Yates staples like humor and exploration of heavier topics that enhance the romance.

What I really liked about this story was how the story that was told. It used the structure of what made a romance novel and translated into what was going on with Amelia’s current romance with Nathan. I thought it was very cleverly done. It would also add to the humor because of the tropes that were on display. It was just a fun element.

I really thought the antics at the hotel between the activities and residents were great. I laughed quite a few times. I liked how the residents pushed the Nathan and Amelia together.

Overall, I liked the romance. I thought that Nathan and Amelia had a solid connection. They could have conversations about writing since they were both were authors. They bonded over trauma of the past. They had developed a great sense of intimacy. I was a little iffy if he was in love with her like she was with him, but I did really like them together.

3.0 out of 5 stars happily ever after, eventually

While one understands the need of some authors to bring light to certain issues; those issues need to enhance the story not overwhelm it. The beginning of the book, Happy After All, was clever, sharp, funny. But as the story progressed, the main character had little dialog and much introspection. Over and over. The author was relentless in reminding the reader of all the hardships the main characters endured, in particular Amelia. I found myself skipping over her “thinking” to try to find the conclusion.
I expected a happy ending, hence the title and many ruminations within the story. Had the author added more to the storyline and significantly reduced the regurgitation of bad parent, bad boyfriend, bad self image, it would have remained a sharp, witty entertaining story.

I loved the style of writing so much! And the way each layer of the story developed was well done. And sooooo much therapeutic gems in this book. Lots of lessons for us all, especially for those who needs a boost to move forward after some bad times. A very motivating story. Relatable but with all the antics of a romance novel. Perfectly balanced. Our heroine is a bit wordy at times, but that's just who she is. Highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid 4.5 stars - surprisingly profound

This book was slow to start - I know we were using the "slow burn" trope, but it was a little *too* slow of a burn for me. That's the one and only reason it's not a five star read. I kept reading because I liked the main character and the cast of background characters is truly fantastic. And, I'm nosy, I wanted to know what the alluded-to tragedies were.

But once it got going, it sped up and then took off like a rocket (around 30-35% I'd say). I am not big into s*x scenes so I skipped through those, but the details didn't affect the storyline. the real gift of this book is the incredibly profound insights on grief and life after tragedy. Like, wow. I've never done well with hard times and this gave me a lot to think about.

I also loved how it was so meta about how "my life isn't a hallmark movie!" while clearly making it a hallmark movie, lol. I will offer a trigger warning - and this is no real spoiler because the direction of the tragedy is clear early on - there is pregnancy loss that is eventually discussed in a way that had me crying my eyes out. I haven't had a loss like that and it still hit like a kick to the stomach. So, think accordingly before reading now.

    really well done.
