About this item

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • READ WITH JENNA BOOK CLUB PICK AS FEATURED ON TODAY • Three estranged siblings return to their family home in New York after their beloved sister’s death in this “deeply nuanced and compelling” (Vogue) novel, from the acclaimed author of Cleopatra and Frankenstein.

“A beautiful portrait of grief and the world-shaping bond sisters share.”—Real Simple

A VOGUE AND HARPER’S BAZAAR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

The three Blue sisters are exceptional—and exceptionally different.
Avery, the eldest and a recovering heroin addict turned strait-laced lawyer, lives with her wife in London; Bonnie, a former boxer, works as a bouncer in Los Angeles following a devastating defeat; and Lucky, the youngest, models in Paris while trying to outrun her hard-partying ways. They also had a fourth sister, Nicky, whose unexpected death left the family reeling. A year later, as they each navigate grief, addiction, and ambition, they find they must return to New York to stop the sale of the apartment they were raised in.

But coming home is never as easy as it seems. As the sisters reckon with the disappointments of their childhood and the loss of the only person who held them together, they realize that the greatest secrets they’ve been keeping might not have been from one another but from themselves.

Imbued with Coco Mellors’s signature combination of humor and heart,
Blue Sisters is a story of what it takes to keep living after loss—and, ultimately, to fall in love with life again.

The complicated story of the Blue sisters had me hooked from the start. The death of their sister Nicky sent the other three sisters off on their own until their parents decided to sell their childhood apartment, and the place where Nicky died. Each of the sisters was in the middle of their own crisis and undoing while trying to find their way back to themselves and each other. This book unfolded like a masterpiece. Each character and their stories were rich and layered. I could see bits of my own lived experiences in each of them. Read it, you won’t regret it for a minute. It’s a story about family, love, and figuring out who you want to become next.

Well written "family drama" about the effect of the death of the fourth sister on the remaining three Blue sisters. Characters are well developed but sometimes a little unrealistic. Spoiler alert: a lot of addiction issues and mention of heavy drug use.

The concept of sisters dealing with their siblings death and their respective struggles was good; however, these chapters felt incredibly long and the book didn’t pick up until the last 80%. It would have been nice if the author snuck in Nicky’s point of view so we can see her struggle with chronic pain and her psychosis before her overdose.

It was a good read. The struggles of life effecting people in different ways. The relationships between family and the struggles to connect. Not everyone finds a happy ending and that was good to point out. The molding of changes, good or bad explains true life. In the end, family….

I come from a family of five girls where I’m the baby. I’m not much like Lucky though. I have a daughter named Bonnie too who is not like this Bonnie. But the feeling of sisterhood is similar. Great read.

It’s a very heavy story, but so beautifully told and so honest and raw. The characters are developed with such honesty and relatability. Really beautiful story-telling and so hopeful!

Blue Sisters expertly explores the intricacies and complex dynamics of sibling relationships. Avery, Bonnie & Lucky are grieving the loss of their sister Nicky who passed away at the age of 27 due to an overdose. Addiction has deep roots in the Blue family as their father is an alcoholic, Avery a recovering addict and Lucky an addict in denial. The grief eats away at each of the girls in different ways and as they rebuild their relationships with one another through the shared pain, they begin to heal. This story shows some of the darkest parts of addiction, I was scared for Lucky as she spiraled. There were instances where I found Avery to be so cringey, angry and cruel. Bonnie, although struggling, was the light this book needed. She balanced everything out and her individual story was by far my favorite of the girls. I liked it but it was a little too dark and a little too heavy for me.

After not having picked up a book in a long while, this was a very comfortable and cozy read to step back in with. The character development came together right from the beginning and made the sisters feel like long-held friends who were easily relatable.
