This is a short story and has a fast pace as most short stories do. It is told from the perspective of four different people. It starts with an expensive New Year’s Eve party and ends with a couple getting their outlandish New Year’s resolutions gifted to them from another couple. The ending of story was not expected and the author, Daniel Hurst, definitely had a knack for short stories.

"The New Year's Party" by Daniel Hurst is a captivating holiday thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Hurst's storytelling prowess shines through as he skillfully weaves unexpected twists and turns into the narrative, keeping readers guessing until the very end. Just when you think you have the ending figured out, Hurst masterfully subverts expectations, leaving readers in awe of his brilliant storytelling.

The author's ability to create palpable tension and intrigue in a short story format is commendable. As the narrative unfolds, readers will find themselves deeply immersed in the characters' dilemmas and the high-stakes game they find themselves entangled in. The psychological complexities of the characters and the moral dilemmas they face add depth and richness to the story, making it a compelling read.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Suspense

Carrie and Andy are your average middle/working class couple. The thought of a ticket for a New Year’s party costing over $300 could be sickening, but determined well worth it with unlimited drinks, appetizers followed by a meal, and then staying the remainder of the evening in a grand hotel. Typically Carrie and Andy wouldn’t choose to spend their budget on this type of event, especially with the cost of living rising, but this year they decide they will.
Each table is filled with couples who don’t know the others, so common small talk is made around the room.
It’s a New Year’s party, so the most common conversation revolves around resolutions. Carrie dreams of visiting New York by arriving on a cruise and staying at the Plaza with all of the must do shopping. Andy lusts for a Ferrari.
Even though Micheal’s and Martin have initiated asking what the other couples are thinking about as they set resolutions, when it’s their time to share they transform from entertaining and showy to timid with a hint of embarrassment.
When Michaela and Martin finally share their resolution, which they are repeating from previous years, everyone thinks they are joking, however they aren’t joking, they are dead serious, especially Martin.
The couples at the table with Martin and Michaela have decisions to make that would change their lives.
Decisions are made for the best, or are they?
Is it too good to be true? Is anybody be not holding onto a secret they don’t want their spouse or other couples to find out?

In December 2021 Daniel Hurst, one of my favorite writers, offered his own Christmas tale at an irresistibly low price. It turned out to be a terrible book. Mr. Hurst is famous for surprising his readers, but the surprise was how bad the book was.

Just in time for the New Year this year Mr. Hurst published his 47-page short story, The New Year’s Party, which was also terribly disappointing — a word I hate to use for a writer as successful as Mr. Hurst, but in this case he’s earned it.

A couple plays an unconventional game with two couples they met on New Year’s Eve at a posh party. It looks like one couple has won, but did they? You’ll need to read this short story for yourselves to find out.

The best I can say is that you will only have wasted an hour of your time and $1.26, but the story’s biggest surprise is that Mr. Hurst seems to have finally run out of good ideas to surprise his readers with.
