About this item

The author of Nothing Is Forgotten takes a dark look at power gone too far, imagining the connection between JFK’s presidential campaign and an ex-cop’s investigation into her husband’s murder.

In 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy makes a historic run for the White House. Despite concerns about his Catholicism, Kennedy’s outward charm is winning the country over, but his inner demons are putting his candidacy in danger and risk destroying his political career.

That same year, Caitlin Russo, a former cop turned reporter, is devoting her skills to finding her husband’s killer. His job as a CIA operative posed its fair share of risks, but when Caitlin discovers his notes about the case that led to his death, she knows there’s more to the story than simple tragedy.

As Caitlin and Kennedy search for the people responsible for upending their lives, some ugly truths about American politics and foreign affairs come to light, and Caitlin finds herself in a web of deceit and shattered hopes, realizing that heroes aren’t always who they seem.

Kudos to Peter Golden for this exceptionally well written and gritty novel. The realism is totally believable and his weaving of actually true events and real people have simply blown me away. I totally and highly recommend this novel for an exciting yet cloudy slice of our history from the late 50's to the beginning of Kennedy's presidency.

Great book for a cozy winter day! Entertaining and just enough historical context to make you wonder is it really fiction?

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique Work of Historical Fiction

The story takes place in 1959-60 around the time of John Kennedy's run for the presidency. It is a unique blend of characters that are totally fictional and real historical characters who are fictionized. Caitlin and Gabe are former NYC policemen. Caitlin is an aspiring author and Gabe works for the CIA and is a personal friend of John Kennedy. Gabe is involved in CIA activities to overthrow Fidel Castro and is also helping Kennedy find a sex tape that could derail his run for the presidency. Early in the book Gabe is killed. And Caitlin sets off to find out why. Was Gabe killed because of his CIA activities or was it due to the search for the sex tapes. The book is a thrill ride through multiple locations and Caitlin interacts with Jack Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy, Trafficante a mob boss, Jack Ruby (future killer of Kennedy assasin). The historical aspects of the book are carefully researched but much of the Kennedy portion of the story, while plausible, are the authors invention. For a person who was alive during Kennedy's presidency and assassination this book is a trip down memory lane. Was Kennedy killed by Russia, by Castro, by the mob? History doesn't know the real answer and this book doesn't provide a hypothesis. But many possibilities exist. At least Caitlin solves her husband's murder.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting historical fiction

I found this an enjoyable read. I'm a student of history and well versed in this period and American history in general. This novel takes some liberties that stretch things, but I didn't find it so much that it made the novel unenjoyable for me. After all, it's a novel. Fiction. It's allowed to work around the edges of history.

The murder mysteries in this book, interwoven with JFK's 1960 campaign, the interactions with the Kennedy family, and mob & CIA intrigue in Cuba and Florida, all make for an interesting read. Of course, the sharing of Kennedy's thoughts and dreams is completely speculative. So what? Again... fiction. I enjoyed it.

I'm a fan of historical fiction, and in this book, Mr. Golden has brought 1960 to life for me.

The Kennedys, Caitlin, the politics, and the Mafia all feel like they have come to life again. And the scenes with Jack and Kick are heartwarming.

    Very satisfying.

An interesting story with historical names and events scattered in it. Couldn’t help wondering if President Kennedy would have been able to hide as much with today’s media.
