About this item

The #1 New York Times–bestselling author tells the origin story of LA defense attorney Mickey Haller.

In this concise, absorbing account, Michael Connelly reveals the work—and the strokes of luck—that contributed to his creation of the character Mickey Haller, the subject of multiple bestselling novels as well as the hit Netflix series. He reveals the lawyers, both fictional and real-life, who played a role in shaping the sharp-witted attorney who does his best work in the back seat—and the librarian who planted the seeds of his future literary career in the steamy, sticky Florida of his childhood. This is not only a portrait of Mickey Haller, but a fascinating look at the award-winning crime novelist who created him, along with Harry Bosch and other unforgettable characters.

“Haller is the kind of slick, cynical showman who can’t resist making high drama out of every legal procedure. . . . There’s always something deadly serious behind Connelly’s entertaining courtroom high jinks.” ―Marilyn Stasio,
The New York Times

“If at first encounter Connelly seems primarily an exceptionally accomplished writer of crime novels, at closer examination he is also a mordant and knowing chronicler of the world in which crime takes place, i.e., our world.” —Jonathan Yardley,
The Washington Post

Very nice discussion of how Mickey Haller came to life. It is indeed all the technical threads Connelly weaves, but the art is in the character. In a curious way there's Kerouac in this. All that about growth and redemption is there but how Mickey triumphs over the system is hidden in the mists of the martini tales from real life. The more real for it. Great read.

I was disappointed. My impression was that this was a new novel. It's not. Honestly I really don't care how or why an author desides to become an writer. I just want to read their stories. This is a how and why...don't care.

This (italicized) is an origin account worthy of its character.

Driven by the need for redemption from an innocent client found guilty. Mickey Haller, Jr. Talented. Perhaps noble. Flawed. Needing redemption.

Connelly writes to the center of the character, Mickey Haller, The Lincoln Lawyer. The character needs substance and direction, which Connelly delivers. Excellent study of a writer.

I really liked reading how MC came up with his character, Mickey Haller, and then how he fleshed him out. It is a great read for fiction writers who are developing their characters.

I am a fan of both the Lincoln Lawyer and Harry Bosch book and TV series and movie. The similar background "book" for Bosch covers Connelly 's early life in more detail. This "book" delves more into the psychology and planning/development of the writer skills needed to write about a defense lawyer. If you are a Mikey Haller/Michael Connelly fan this is a worthwhile investment of a few minutes. Do also read the Bosch companion mini-biography.

It’s the author telling you how he writes a book. Lost 2.70 of my gift card

This book contains some interesting information, but it was way too short. I was expecting more details on how the author developed his iconic character, but the there was not much about that. There was almost nothing about Mickey Haller's personal life, which is a very big part of his character. A disappointment all around.
