About this item

A woman who can’t remember her past encounters a mysterious stranger in a chilling novel of mounting psychological suspense by the authors of The Last Girl Left.

She wakes on the shore of a remote lake in the middle of the night, freezing and afraid. With no memory of who she is or how she got there, she stumbles frantically toward the lights of a house. The handsome stranger who lives there is shocked to see a woman on his doorstep and takes her in.

Trapped by a winter storm and cut off from the outside world, she starts to suspect that all is not right with the house on Gravewater Lake—or the man, who says his name is Gregg. Because there are whispers in the night, and phantom footsteps pace the halls. Is Gregg hiding a dark secret, or is she losing her mind?

As she struggles to remember her past and make sense of her present, she soon discovers that people are not always who they seem, and the truth might be more deadly than she could ever have imagined.

As is usually the case, I thoroughly enjoyed this tale from two of my favorite authors. Their ability to craft, not only a gripping story but also amazingly believable characters, is what brings me back every time a new book is released. This one was a true page turn from beginning to end. And, as always, Just as I think I have it all figured out , a plot twist proves me wrong once again. My sincere thanks to the authors for continuing to practice their craft for the benefit of the readers that love what they do. I highly recommend all of their novels to anyone that loves a great story.

4.0 out of 5 stars The ending didn’t do it for me

I thought this may be my first ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of the year when I was about 50% done with the book, but the ending was just too unrealistic to blame on happenstance. Still a good read, full of spooky and suspenseful themes that will make your heart race. A solid thriller.

For whatever reason, this story just did not resonate with me. I sped-read through the last half, just to be done with it. I found the storyline a bit ridiculous and unrealistic throughout. Very few of the main character’s actions were sensible, and I was entirely unsympathetic to her “plight” as a result. It was similar to the old cliche of the female in a horror movie who keeps making stupid decisions, while the audience audibly groans. I think 3 stars is generous, which I chose because the actual writing and editing is fine. But the story was a miss for me.

I got this book as an Amazon first read. I found it very engaging. I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. The characters are well developed. I was a bit annoyed with Anna putting herself in dangerous situations. I thought I had the story figured out but the ending had a terrific twist. Well written.

The book was good! The twist was great! The ending was a little corney and predictable. I read it on vacation which was a good time for a book like this.

I started this book yesterday afternoon. I found it hard to put it down. Unable
to finish it before bedtime, I picked up where I left off as soon as I could this morning. I just finished it. One of the best suspenseful reads I have found in a long time. Highly recommend this book!

Such a wildly original and. exciting twist at the end of this hard to put down book. Highly recommend for readers with high standards. I'm a huge fan of Burke, Baldacci, Connelly, Flynn etc..and I'd put this in that league--except for James Lee Burke above all. Well done. Will look for more by this author.
