About this item

From bestselling indie author and TikTok favorite Laura Thalassa comes a witch fantasy set in the world of the Bargainer series.

At age twenty, Selene Bowers desperately hopes to be accepted into Henbane Coven, an academy for young witches. Since one of the requirements for entry is to connect with her powers via a quest through the wilderness, Selene books a trip to South America. When a nefarious supernatural force tries to drag her plane from the sky, Selene's magic awakens to save her life―at a cost. Using her powers devours her memories, one by one.

Worse, when Selene braves the jungle and discovers the source of the attack, she finds herself awakening an ancient evil, Memnon the Cursed, who mistakes Selene for his long-dead wife. The wife who betrayed him. Selene manages to escape and begin her studies at Henbane, but when Memnon turns up at the coven and witches are found dead across campus, Selene becomes entangled in a dangerous plot. Accused of the murders on the basis of her memory loss, Selene must rely on Memnon's help for answers―and his plans for her will change everything.

Bewitched by Laura Thalassa is a total gem! The slow burn romance is done perfectly—every interaction between the characters builds the tension until you’re practically on the edge of your seat waiting for them to finally get together. And when they do? Totally worth the wait.

The female lead is one of my favorites. She has so much growth throughout the story, and I loved watching her become more confident and powerful. Plus, she’s hilarious! Her wit and humor had me laughing out loud, and she’s just a really fun character to follow.

The school setting in Bewitched also gave me major Harry Potter vibes, which I loved. The magic, the classes, the friendships—it felt familiar in the best way, with a twist of its own that kept things fresh and exciting. If you’re a fan of slow-burn romance, strong character development, and a touch of magical school drama, you need to pick this one up!

I was very fortunate to be an arc reader for this book! I read the Bargainer series last year and loved it, so when I saw that Laura was releasing this book within the same world, I immediately added it to my list. I gotta say, I really enjoyed this book! I loved the witches aspect and storyline. I also liked the wolf shifter aspect added in as side characters. The magic system felt pretty defined and fleshed out. The witches having a "familiar" was pretty cool, and I found Selene's discovery of hers and their subsequent relationship to be so fascinating. I also really appreciated all the linguistic descriptions and historical context for Memnon and Roxilana's people (as well as the subsequent author's note). That was a pretty fascinating aspect to me throughout the book, as there were many places where the language between Selene and Memnon changed. The reader was still reading the same thing, but we always got the alert to the shift in language, so I thought that was done very well. Selene's character in general really resonated with me. I have ADHD and my forgetfulness is quite severe, to the point where I am writing little notes to myself and placing them all over where I know I will see them so I won't forget things later. I also feel like I have to work twice as hard to accomplish the same amount of work as everyone else to compensate. So needless to say, there were some points where Selene's memory loss struggles and her coping mechanisms tended to bring out an emotional response in me that I wasn't anticipating. I saw myself in her a little and understood a little of the helplessness she might have felt at times. So I feel like I want to thank Laura for making someone like myself feel seen by Selene's character. I know it's not exactly the same, but the connection that I felt with the character was very real. I'm a sucker for fated/soul mates, loved Bargainer as I said previously, so that aspect got me for sure. Memnon is spicy and sexy right from GO and I like their challenging of one another, it's really hot! His ability to quickly evolve and mold himself into a changing world around him was very mysterious and also extremely sexy at the same time. Like this man is thousands of years old and he's out here surfing the internet. Sir, what?? I feel like I should be frustrated by him, but something about him makes my own fire burn in challenge (aka turned on), so I guess, get it Selene! I absolutely ADORED all of the endearments Memnon gave to Selene. There's just something about any iteration of the lines "There she is..." or "There's my so-and-so..." said by the MMC after the FMC does something vicious that just melts me into a puddle instantly. Memnon had me in a liquid state non-stop! The back and forth between Selene and him in the sense of enemies to lovers to enemies to "I'm not sure what now" was kinda crazy but also kinda hot. There's never a clean break between them, there's always that little thread of something that you know still exists and it just keeps you on the edge and wanting to read more. I think Laura did a good job of weaving their past into their present in the physical and emotional sense that really seemed to transcend time and space. But stuff gets crazy between them! Also, I love to hate a cliffhanger, but that ending just felt OBSCENELY cut short. Like BOOM, big stuff happens, and instant darkness. No epilogue, no preview, nothing. REALLY wish we could have had a morsel of something to go on. I'm very much looking forward to reading the next book! I would definitely recommend this first book in what I think we can assume will be a new series from Laura. Looking forward to the next book, hopefully it won't be too long of a wait!

    5.0 out of 5 stars I can’t wait for book 2…

I have to start off by saying that I loved this book so much, the ONLY reason it took me so long to read it is because my life has been so chaotic, to put it lightly, for the last month. I didn’t have the mental capacity to read it or absorb it rather, so I ended up re-starting it a few times (ugh) as sad as that is. But, I loved it! It is the perfect, paranormal, enemies to lovers (well, maybe lovers?) story with an intriguing mystery to uncover that keeps you on your toes.

Selene is one of those leading ladies you can’t help but love. She is a young witch doing everything she can to be accepted into a coven while trying to keep herself alive day to day. Her magic, one of the coolest things about her literally eats her memories every time she uses it so she really struggles to get through every day life lol. I honestly loved all her notes to herself, and her reminders? They’re so witty and funny. I found myself really enjoying her dialogue!

Along the way, of trying to navigate life and work her way into a coven, she takes a little trip. She has to go through some type of trial and then write about it in detail as part of her acceptance into a coven. And boy, does she take a trip! She heads to a different country and quite effortlessly wakes the biggest of bad sorcerers of all time, Memnon. Who is both equally intriguing and aggravating! He’s got all the charm but, I wanted to ring his neck a couple of times lol. They have a whole past to uncover.. but, is Selene really who Memnon thinks she is? Are they actually soulmates? Can they overcome their past?

This book has so many twists and turns and it really keeps you on your toes. I have NO idea what to expect for the second book and I love that. This is my first Laura Thalassa book (thank you Naomi) and I was thoroughly impressed with the world building and character building. I loved the story so far and I can’t wait for more! I also cannot wait to see Memnon grovel. So looking forward to Bespelled!
