About this item

Four cousins navigate love, loss, and the meaning of family over the course of one memorable year in this heartfelt family drama.

Cousins Mari, Erica, Selena, and Gracie are inseparable. They aren’t just family but best friends—sharing secrets, traditions, and a fierce love for their abuelita. But their idyllic childhood ends when Mari’s parents divorce, forcing her to move away. With Mari gone, the girls’ tight-knit bond unravels.

Fifteen years later, Mari’s got the big house and handsome husband, but her life is in shambles. Erica’s boyfriend just dumped her, and her new boss hates her. Selena can’t seem to find her place in the world—not Mexican enough for her family, not white enough for her colleagues. And Gracie is a Catholic school teacher with an all-consuming crush, but she can’t trust herself when it comes to romance.

As rocky as the cousins’ lives have become, nothing can prepare them for the heartbreaking loss of a loved one. When tragedy reunites them, will they remember their abuelita’s lessons about family and forgiveness—or are fifteen years of separation too much to overcome?

5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing book! I couldn't put it down!

This was so great! So many instances reminded me of my large extended Mexican-American family. The English and Spanish languages, words and slang. Holidays and food experiences intermingled with religious sacraments and experiences like Christmas, funerals, birthdays!! An amazing story of female empowerment, family and being a Latina! Such a good to read!

I enjoyed the book, it was very realistic.

It didn’t have these very “perfect” people that you typically see in a fiction book.

Not really a big fan of Erica. I understand that she’s upset that her boyfriend broke up with her, but I don’t think she has any good reasons to be so mean to Adrian.

She admitted herself that Adrian wasn’t picking on her, he criticised everyone, like a boss does.

Esteban is giving off abusive vibes, I hope he doesn’t get violent with Mari as the book progresses.

I really didn’t like how Erica felt about Mari, I understand that she’s just that Mari didn’t visit anymore, but the girl was constantly doing too much

We get it Selena, sex is great. But Selena just felt too pushy towards Gracie. You should have sex, you’re a prude, it doesn’t have to mean anything. Like girl not everyone wants a no strings attached relationship.

I think in the end, Mari should’ve ended up single, as a way to build her bakery and herself up again. I’m not sure if she and Esteban got back together.

Anyways good story, would definitely recommend but be ready to be frustrated at the characters

I started this book and finished in 48 hours because it was just so good. I am not Latina (despite my name) but I married in to the culture and have embraced it in every way. This story, told from the viewpoints of four cousins, is beautiful and so authentic. I could picture the fights and the cooking and the Friday nights - just a beautiful story! Highly recommend!!

Loved everything about the book. Highly recommend. Loved each of the characters and love that this book doesn’t force each of them towards an idyllic Happily Ever After.

I will say though, about the narration of the book. There were so many times when I could hear page turning, throat clearing, or background noise on the audible version.

4.0 out of 5 stars what a wonderful family

I loved how this family was always together to support each other. Tho I felt some of the explicit sex lines could have been omitted. They did show how relationships can be repaired and in the end Family is forever.
