About this item

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Kendra Elliot comes the first novella in the thrilling Widow’s Island series.

FBI Special Agent Cate Wilde is back home on a remote Pacific Northwest island when she gets the call: a teenager’s skeletal remains have been found on a nearby island.

Together with Tessa Black, a childhood friend turned local deputy, Cate confronts dreary weather and bleak leads to make sense of the death. The complications pile up as Cate is distracted by the coroner on the case—and by nagging memories that draw her twenty years into the past. The remains suggest eerie similarities between this victim, and Cate and Tessa’s friend Samantha, who disappeared when she was fourteen.

Cate finds herself up against closemouthed locals, buried town secrets, and even her own heart. As the case unravels, will she be able to cut through the fog and find justice for the missing and the dead?

I received a complimentary electronic copy of this excellent mystery novel from TheFussyLibrarian, author Kendra Elliot, and publisher Montlake. The action is for the most part on Widow's Island, one of the small islands in the Pacific, scattered around the temperate zone, Puget Sound, and Seattle, Washington. Close to the Bone is the first in a series of 10 mysteries titled Widow's Island. Some of these novels are written by Kendra Elliot, and some by Melinda Leigh. Close to the Bone is a quick read, with lots of background, personable characters, and a well-managed mystery. I am pleased to recommend Kendra Elliot to friends and family. She writes a fine tale.

I look forward to reading more of this series, and her work. These near-tropical islands have long been on my bucket list. Until I make it up there, I am pleased to be able to visit through the eyes of Ms. Elliot and Ms. Leigh.

A nice quick read setting us up for more on the case ahead. A kind of prequel to introduce all the island's characters. I'll probably have to keep at these.. like streaming episodes of a crime drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Compelling & Suspenseful read - with PNW twists!

Kendra Elliott's books have filled the JA Jance whole in my PNW mystery reading heart.

This is the perfect read for an afternoon when you want a couple of hours to take your mind off of everything and get drawn into a story! Kendra layers in the right amount of story progression to want to keep reading all of the series, not just his one. Not at all the ending I was expecting and also got me to download the 2nd one right away.

Also, as someone from the PNW I love her realistic references to everything - like ferry issues

Kendra Elliot is an excellent crime thriller writer. She may nit be a twisty writer but she’s got a steady hand on the tiller. I’ll read everything she writes.
