About this item

The curtain rises, and the chandelier falls—taking the star of the show down with it. An ambitious young usher working at the theater sets out to find who killed the leading lady in a crackling short story by #1 New York Times bestselling author Nita Prose.

Grace is an usher at the stately (and possibly haunted) Royal Ruby Theater. She’s also an aspiring actress ready for her big break. Vanessa is the glamorous yet spiteful star who’s made more enemies than friends on her rise to the top. When Vanessa winds up dead in act one, Grace is determined to find the killer. But is she seeking justice, or something darker?

Murder at the Royal Ruby is part of Obsession, a collection of compulsively readable short stories about people pushed to their extremes. So addictive you won’t be able to put them down—read or listen to each story in a single sitting.

The Murder at the Royal Ruby was an engaging short read that I completed in about 30 minutes. While the story captured the essence of classic theater mysteries, I found the plot to be somewhat predictable.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Actress Is Killed Onstage, Causing a Peculiar Situation!

Nita Prose has a talent for creating flawed characters that still sparkle, which is one of the things I love about her writing. In fact, I consider her book, THE MAID, one of my top reads of all time. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read!

Ms. Prose's short story also showcases her excellent writing style. It takes place in The Royal Ruby Theatre, where the primary characters are Grace and Vanessa, who are polar opposites. Grace is an usher with dreams of becoming an actress, but the large birthmark on her face holds her back. Despite this, her personality and talent shine through and endear her to everyone, everyone except Vanessa. Vanessa, the star of the show, is a diva who expects to be treated as such and doesn't want to share the spotlight. Grace can't reach her dream without Vanessa's endorsement. However, when Vanessa is killed on stage, Grace is put in a precarious position.

So this was another quick reads on the airplane. I was stuck without wifi and only a few "books" downloaded. The story did have some imagination and was well written, but very flat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Who killed the star of the show that everyone hated?

Plot

We watch the story of a murder play out though the eyes of a humble girl who wants to get her chance to act in theater as the person murdered is exactly the one person who stands in the way of her dreams

Likes

The story has a nice flow and it was easy to listen to it.

Dislikes

I haven't truly connected to the characters much, so the twist in the story, even though unexpected, did not stir up emotions.

Audience

I'd say that this short story is best suited for those who would like to get into murder miseries, but don't have much experience in the genre yet.

Rating

I rate this 3/5 stars, as it was well written, just not a good fit for me personally.

This was a good short story about an underdog who comes out on top. However, she has to remain silent in order for her career to begin. I enjoyed the short read!

3.0 out of 5 stars It was the ghost!

In a haunted theater all bad things that happen are blamed on a ghost. What the MC wants is a shot on the stage and she needs all four signatures. When the one that won’t sign for her has a tragic death she has to decide her future.

Although the story was good I feel like it lacked a closing. I love Nita Prose so maybe she left the ending the way she did to make us wonder. I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it either. I like closure on the ending of books. As far as I know this is a stand alone book.
