About this item

Some doors are locked for a reason…

While eleven-year-old Nora Davis was up in her bedroom doing homework,
she had no idea her father was killing women in the basement.

Until the day the police arrived at their front door.

Decades later, Nora’s father is spending his life behind bars, and Nora is a successful surgeon with a quiet, solitary existence. Nobody knows her father was a notorious serial killer. And she intends to keep it that way.

Then Nora discovers one of her young female patients has been murdered. In the same unique and horrific manner that her father used to kill his victims.

Somebody knows who Nora is. Somebody wants her to take the fall for this unthinkable crime. But she’s not a killer like her father. The police can’t pin anything on her.

As long as they don’t look in her basement.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of her better books

I’ve read a few of this author’s books, some I really liked and some were just meh for me. This one was pretty good, kept you guessing, definitely didn’t see the twist. I thought the character was believable and well developed. And the HEA in the epilogue was nice but interesting with another twist.

Didn't see that end coming at all, very unpredictable! Which is one of my favorite things about her writing style! On to the next one, I'm addicted to her beautiful mind and writing style... Always a good read!

Another hit by Frieda McFadden! I listened to this on audible. Honestly, hated the girls voice reading, in fact almost stopped listening but, the story grabbed me so quick I had to keep listening and so glad I did! Eventually I just got over the bad reading voice and focused on the story, it was great! Definitely recommend reading over listening though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Finally an actual Psychological Thriller
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2024
I've been making my way through Freida's blacklist and this is the first book of hers out of the five that I have read so far that actually qualifies as a psychological thriller. I'm not saying that this was a great one but it is miles better than her recent ones.

There was an actual twist that was satisfying and made a lot of sense, although it would have made more sense if we had more of a sense of the timeline. However, the epilogue really tries too hard to round-up every little loose end up and I really wish that some things were left open ended.

I enjoyed the pacing and the red herrings were a bit too obvious but it was written well. I still don't appreciate that all of Freida's Female main characters are inevitably saved by a male charcter. It is a tired trope and she needs to retire it. If you have a strong, independent female character just let her be strong and independent, she can and will save herself without regret or feeling ashamed that she did what she had to in order to survive.

On to the next one... Here's hoping that Freida's older releases are better than her recent ones.

The book starts off good. It hooked me in from the start and I couldn’t wait to read the next chapter. I thought the book was going to be predictable but it was not the case.

Really liked this book. Would read more from this author. Lot of twist and turns. Maybe the main character could have been more proactive towards the stuff that was happening to her.

This book did not disappoint. The build up of character development and plot were above and beyond. As always, there's a twist and turn until the very end... like the END. This one is just as good as The Inmate.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quick and easy read

This was another quick and easy read from McFadden. The storyline was intriguing and held my interest throughout. While I had half of the twist figured out, the other half threw me for a loop. The ending tied everything together and was satisfying. I enjoyed this one!
