About this item

A single mother in segregated Virginia pushes back on societal prejudice and her own family’s judgment in an emotionally powerful short story by New York Times bestselling author Sadeqa Johnson.

With a newborn in tow, Bubbles Jones escapes a brutal sanctuary for “wayward girls” to confront the hypocritical shame of her pastor father and the betrayal of a lover. But Bubbles is accompanied by a woman who offers her shelter and a dream. Forging an unpredictable path ahead, Bubbles will not yield and will not hide in her unwavering commitment to make a big life real in a world determined to keep her small.

Sadeqa Johnson’s Fallen Grace is part of Blaze, a collection of short stories about incendiary women across the decades who dare to defy convention. They can be read or listened to in one sitting.

This story was so great! The beginning was really sad, but I loved Bubbles! She was such a strong woman, but still a teenager. The ending was awesome

Our focus is a teenage unwed mother, facing judgment from her family, her church and segregation. This Blaze collection has given us women who find strength to do what needs done and Ms. Johnson has delivered Bubbles.

These short stories boil things down to their essence and no words are wasted. Fears and doubt are just the beginning and Bubbles faces both.

A short story that will keep you turning pages to see what happens next. What must a young black girl do when she is placed in a home for unwed mothers by her very religious parents? What a good story of a strong willed woman with everything in her life stacked against her. She must plan to escape the horrible ‘home’ with her baby. I cheered her on through disappointment after disappointment. Get to know ‘Bubbles’ by reading this. I bet you’ll be glad you did.

It was ok. Not how I expected it to end. I needed more to the ending. I’m glad she found the courage to face religious people because those are not Christian people.

This was a good short story that is very relatable.
I liked the ending, but as any well written story does... it left me wanting more.
It ended too soon.

About values and how they can be manipulated to serves one’s own purpose. Bubbles and Gertie show the conflicting sides of race, wealth and standards. This is a very short story but serves the purpose of getting the point across.

I’m not really familiar with short stories, but I really enjoyed this story line. It was quick, so of course there wasn’t a lot of character and plot development. However, the author got you connected with the characters and you were rooting for them both!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bubbles's Rebellion
Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2024
Bubbles might be an unwed teen parent, but she will not give up her baby or feel shame. Through sheer grit and cunning, she flees the birthing house to which she was condemned to return to the community she knew. She learned an important lesson as she and Gertrude, a White girl on the run as well, planned their escape from the helpful nuns - People are treacherous and selfish. Sadly, the ones raising their hands and voices to the Lord are some of the worst. But as a true child of God, she will forgive their sins against her.

A great short representing the lot of women over history, cast out by the men who bred them and the families that raised them. Turned over to "helpful God-fearing organizations" that abused and used the women more, siphoning the very souls of those they were supposed to help. And highlighting the hypocrisy of the revered church leaders, who revile in public the sins they revel in in private. Shame on them all.
