About this item
From the acclaimed author of Garden Spells comes a tale of lost souls, secrets that shape us, and how the right flock can guide you home.
Down a narrow alley in the small coastal town of Mallow Island, South Carolina, lies a stunning cobblestone building comprised of five apartments. It's called The Dellawisp and it's named after the tiny turquoise birds who, alongside its human tenants, inhabit an air of magical secrecy.
When Zoey Hennessey comes to claim her deceased mother's apartment at The Dellawisp, she meets her quirky, enigmatic neighbors including a girl on the run, a grieving chef whose comfort food does not comfort him, two estranged middle-aged sisters, and three ghosts. Each with their own story. Each with their own longings. Each whose ending isn't yet written.
When one of her new neighbors dies under odd circumstances the night Zoey arrives, she's thrust into the mystery of The Dellawisp, which involves missing pages from a legendary writer whose work might be hidden there. She soon discovers that many unfinished stories permeate the place, and the people around her are in as much need of healing from wrongs of the past as she is. To find their way they have to learn how to trust each other, confront their deepest fears, and let go of what haunts them.
Delightful and atmospheric, Other Birds is filled with magical realism and moments of pure love that won't let you go. Sarah Addison Allen shows us that between the real and the imaginary, there are stories that take flight in the most extraordinary ways.

REVIEW :
First book by this author for me. quietgirl said it was her “favorite book of ‘23 - absolutely stunning”. The description alone pulled me towards this book.

After my last book, a prison thriller reviewed above, I needed something totally different. Right away, I’m introduced to a group of quirky characters that I feel I’m going to come to love. The writing is soooo visual I feel like I’m right there at the Dellawisp Condos. What an eclectic group of neighbors. I felt this book really showed how we can all, no matter where are roots began, can pick ourselves up and find family when least expected. I have a connection with both my parents and birds so this book really touched my heart. This book warmed my heart.

This is a great read. The characters are charming, their stories are beautiful. I enjoyed it! I'm typically a sci fantasy reader but this was worth it.

Such a good little read. I think I would have loved to live at The Dell a wisp. Enjoyed the characters ...and their back stories. Would recommend to teenagers and above.

“If the people around you don't love you just as you are find new people. They're out there. “
Mallow Island sits just off of the coast of South Carolina. Once known for its delicious marshmallow treats, the island is now primarily a tourist attraction thanks to the book, Sweet Mallow, authored by local celebrity, Roscoe Avenger. At the end of an alley sits a horseshoe-shaped building, the Dellawisp, named after a local, quirky and somewhat magical, turquoise bird. This is Zoey Hennessey's new home. Zoey inherited the condo from her late mother, it was given to her once she reached the age of 18. Happy to leave her unhappy life with her father and step-mother, Zoey along with her invisible pet bird, Pigeon, is excited to live where her mother once lived, hoping to learn more about her. Along with her mother’s history, Zoey is excited to make some new friends.
What she finds is a collection of oddball residents, most of whom don't interact. Together there are middle-aged sisters, Lucy and Lizbeth, who live in separate units and do not communicate at all, Max, a shy, lonely chef who is still learning how to say good-bye, Charlotte, a young and talented Henna artist who has been on the run for years and Frazier, another talented artist (drawing) who serves as the building’s supervisor and is the only one who has contact with the building’s owner. Three ghosts also inhabit the building, each with her own history and agenda.
This unique book adds magical realism and romance to a story of loss and friendship and family (real or made), to make the difficult task of starting over into an enjoyable tale. An easy read, I finished it in one day. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

what a wonderful book. so tender and filled with love and magic and charm. every single character was so interesting and well developed, that one cannot help but feel for them and with them whatever pain or happiness they are feeling. i adored this interpretation of love as something that is given without a need of receiving it back, i want to live life similarly. i want to love endlessly and fiercely, i want to be surprised every day by the magnitude of my love.
it proves to be true, every ghost story is a love story.

Predictable but unusual storyline... but Sarah Allen paints a clear picture of settings, personalities and insights into human nature and what we are truly all about. Enjoyable story.
