About this item

A New York Times bestseller! From Edgar Award–winning novelist, playwright, and story-songwriter Rupert Holmes comes a diabolical thriller with a killer concept: The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts, “a fantasy academy laid out like a combination of Hogwarts, Downton Abbey, and a White Lotus–style resort” (Los Angeles Times) dedicated to the art of murder where students study how best to “delete” their most deserving victim.

Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate…and where one’s mandatory graduation thesis is getting away with the perfect murder of someone whose death will make the world a much better place to live.

Prepare for an education you’ll never forget. A “fiendishly funny” (
Booklist) mix of witty wordplay, breathtaking twists and genuine intrigue, Murder Your Employer will gain you admission into a wholly original world, cocooned within the most entertaining book about well-intentioned would-be murderers you’ll ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good!

I bought this one on a whim just to try something different to break up my norm and, I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. This was a very entertaining read from cover to cover.

My only complaint is with the formatting of the ebook. The story is told through numerous documents/letters/textbook entries and the formatting changes for each. In print I applaud this attention to detail, but having the text formatting seemingly hard-coded on the ebook version made certain parts very difficult to read as it means you can't change your reading font (nor the size on some parts).
I'd say if you're interested in this one to give thought to the print edition, but by all means DO check it out.

Cliff is a disgruntled employee, with legitimate cause, and has set his sights on "deleting" his employer. Execution of his deletion fails, but not without some curious eyes witness to the attempt. He soon meets the owners of those eyes, a couple individuals from a mysterious school who offer him the chance to avoid jail, along with a second chance to delete his employer. Obviously he accepts, is blindly escorted to the top-secret location of this mysterious school, and thus begins his training.

The story pays close attention to two other students and their deletion goals, and is just as entertaining as Cliff's. Characters, big and small, are well realized, the crazy plans of deletion are…well, crazy, but thoroughly thought out and are so entertaining. And the happy ending put a smile on my face.
There's hint of a book 2 (aside from the cover saying Vol 1) but, honestly, this is a perfect standalone for me and I'd be more than happy if it stays that way and the author creates something else new and refreshing like he did with McMasters.

After a dismal, slow start, the story picks up and becomes quite engaging. It takes a while to sort out the three story lines of students at McMasters who are training to “delete” their employers. The best parts were the descriptions of the intricate planning and diversions necessary to complete their aims. Rest assured, each of the targets deserve their demise.

When you’ve read as many books as I have, it’s difficult to be surprised by something new and fresh. This book was absolutely perfect from beginning to end. Quick-witted. Fun. Well-crafted characters set in an ideal time and location. I only hope that someone buys the rights and makes this a movie. Such a stunning book.

More like 3.7 stars. Ending was okay but the story was fun and cheeky
It was a great summer read. Very clever and had so many euphemisms for murder
It often made me chuckle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful surprise

I have a hard time finding much time to read, so typically a book this long would take me months. But it grabbed my attention at the very beginning, and the more I read, the more I was hooked. I finished it in about two weeks!

Murder Your Employer is delightfully original, funny and tongue in cheek. I enjoyed the different voices of the narrator and one of the characters, who writes a good bit of the book. It was nice that, even though actual characters are writing the story, they keep details hidden until the great reveal at the end.

Not a traditional mystery, Murder Your Employer has several mysteries within the story. Rather than wondering "whodunnit," you wonder how they're going to do it and whether they're going to get away with it.

This book is a pleasant deviation from the ordinary, and I hope to read more from Holmes in the future.

Loved the premise (who hasn’t wanted to murder their employer at some point or another ????????‍♀️????????????‍♀️?) and the secretive “Harry Potter”-like aspect of the school teaching people how to murder their targets. Truly loved following the 3 protagonists as they planned their deletions. Fun book with a few unexpected twists!
