About this item

In this gripping second novella in the Widow’s Island series, bestselling author Melinda Leigh delivers a chilling tale of murder in the Pacific Northwest.

Deputy Tessa Black gave up her career as a detective with the Seattle PD and returned to the Pacific Northwest island she calls home to care for her ailing mother. Tessa thinks her mother’s illness is the worst thing she’ll face—until she responds to a routine call in the state park and discovers a local man harpooned to a sign.

As the murder investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the victim harbored secrets. Together with her FBI agent best friend, Cate, and park ranger Logan Wilde, Tessa must connect the pieces before the murderer strikes again. But the closer she gets to the truth, the more she finds herself—and the ones she loves—in harm’s way.

Pressure mounts as Tessa attempts to juggle the current case with her search for the truth behind her childhood friend Samantha’s disappearance twenty years ago. Can Tessa find the murderer and uncover answers about Samantha without jeopardizing everything she holds dear?

This was the perfect nugget to read at bedtime. I loved the location and it had all the elements needed. Widow’s Island seems like an idyllic place to grow up in and return to later in life. The romantic angle was just enough to be enticing. Mix in a murder to spice things up and it was just right.

If you think you're getting a mystery you'll be disappointed. Yes, somebody gets murdered. No, nobody has a clue who did it. For the number of law enforcement personnel populating the pages, precious little actual investigation takes place. The bad guy just sort of...well, I won't spoil what minimal mystery exists. If you think you're getting a romance you will also be disappointed. I've read steamier romance in a YA novel. At most we have two people who may be interested in each other who spend the whole book circling around each other not doing anything about it. What this really turns out to be is a cozy shall town story about a relatively isolated community where everybody knows everybody. Primarily the story revolves around the main character, Tessa, worrying about her mother's declining mental health and how it's impacting her fifteen year old sister. At first the mother's condition seems sad but plausible. Then we discover that the mother has Alzheimer's. Huh? If the younger daughter is fifteen, even if you assume the mother was forty -two when she was born, that only makes her fifty- seven. That seems a bit young for advanced Alzheimer's, but I'm no doctor, so ok. But then the authors start referring to the mother as "frail" and "elderly" like she's an octogenarian or something. The disconnect, frankly, pulled me out of the story. Other than that, it was a cute story. You might think with all of my complaints that I didn't like the story, but actually it was easy and fun to read. I enjoyed the characters and make no mistake, it's a very character driven story.

Coping with her mother’s dementia and her nighttime wandering, the deputy is stretched thin when a gruesome murder happens on the quiet island. While searching for her missing mother and a murderer, the deputy feels a strong draw to her high school crush who’s now the island park ranger. Love begins to grow as the crimes are solved and a solution for her mother is found. There’s lots happening on Widow’s Island. Join the fun by reading this book.

Quick and lively storytelling. Briefly revisiting characters, would like way more Kate. Complicated story but not as compelling as the first.

I am not a big fan of short stories. I like my books a long , involved and complicated.
Yet I thoroughly enjoyed this issue of these characters. The situation and issues are real life subjects that I and many others have to deal with and overcome on a daily basis.
I look forward to the next installment.
This was a good days read . it was affordable and well worth my time and effort.

While I loved that I was able to sit down and read this in one sitting, I almost feel like parts of it are a little rushed. Don't get me wrong, this is a good read, but I just wish there was a little more development. Maybe it will come throughout the series, which I will continue to read because I'm invested in the story.
