About this item

A brand-new series perfect for Richard Osman readers and all fans of a page-turning whodunnit.

It was meant to be the start of quiet season in the sleepy Cornish village of Seal Bay, but not for sexagenarian librarian and wild swimming enthusiast Morwenna Mutton. Because when a local businessman is found on the beach with a bread knife is his back, bungling police officer DI Rick Tremayne is soon out of his depth. Morwenna knows it’s going to be down to her to crack the case.

The list of people the victim upset is long, the evidence is slight, and an arrest illusive. Morwenna has plenty to occupy her time what with ghostly goings-on at the library and skullduggery at her granddaughter’s school, but she could never resist a challenge. And even the most ruthless of murderers should quake at the sight of this amateur sleuth getting on her bike to track them down.

If you love Miss Marple and The Thursday Murder Club, then you'll love The Morwenna Mutton mysteries.

Thank you for visiting my books.

I write uplifting novels about living life and loving it, with many of my characters being in their golden years. My stand-alone stories take place in a variety of inspirational and colourful settings, from a typical Somerset village to lively Paris, to a beautiful Mexican coastal resort.

The central characters are older people who are full of fun and mischief, who have adventures, find love, lose love, make wonderful friends and discover the true meaning of happiness. There is much laughter, sometimes a few tears along the way, but always there will be the joy of celebrating each moment in life and living it to the full.

My novels offer readers many smiles and the chance to make new friends between the pages. I hope you enjoy sifting through the titles and synopses.

Sending you my warmest wishes,

Judy

At first this will seem like another hokey regional cozy mystery, but let it develop and it has more depth than you first think. Oddly strange obliviousness is the biggest quirk but otherwise entertaining for a quick cozy read.

I was tired of the same ol' same ol' and decided to try a cozy mystery. When I read that this was in Cornwall, I thought, "Now there's somewhere new for me!" I'm so glad I bought it! I laughed, I cried, I read it in two sittings, fell in love with the Mutton family and friends and am a fan for life. Thank you Judy Leigh! If I wasn't well past 60, I might have tried a vacation there!

4.0 out of 5 stars It’s good but no Miss Marple!

I knew who the villain was within 30% in it was extremely obvious. That really didn’t make it less enjoyable just a bit frustrating. I don’t really like when an author tries to make a strong female but one that is so stubborn that it read as just ridiculous. This was almost in that territory but at least Morweena was a great character. I absolutely loved the relationship between the Mutton women. I definitely recommend this read it was a quick one and very cute at times with just a bit of suspense.

It was an interesting story but some of it was kind of silly and far fetched. Didn’t like the swear words and should have been warned of that.

Interesting book by Judy Leigh. It’s about Morwenna Mutton, grandmother and—we’re about to see—might be a sleuth. Here’s the story: A rich guy no one likes is stabbed in the back in the dark on the beach. Morwenna discovers him just before he dies. She’s the first potential subject because she found him. Her mom’s the second because she yelled in public that she was gonna kill him. Morwenna’s daughter is the third because he was stabbed with her bread knife. And the plot thickens from there. If you like humor mixed in with murders, you’ll enjoy this read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun shopfront cozy set in Cornwall

Foul Play at Seal Bay is the first book in a shopfront cozy series by Judy Leigh. Released 7th Aug 2023 by Boldwood Books, it's 298 pages and is available in hardcover, paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free. The second book in the series, Bloodshed on the Boards, is also currently available on KU.

This is a nice, well written cozy set in Cornwall, featuring an eccentric 61 year old amateur sleuth and her friends and family. The untimely death of a local almost entirely unlamented businessman from London has the close knit community aghast, and it soon becomes clear that the local inspector is not up to the task.

The language is entirely clean (there are a few colloquial uses of "bleddy" but nothing worse), there are no graphic descriptions on-page, and the resolution, and denouement are mostly satisfying, if heavily foreshadowed. The writing is competent and the dialogue not clunky or awkward.

There are currently 2 books in the series. It would make a good choice for a short binge or buddy read. Although reviewers have compared it to Osman's Thursday Murder Club, it compares better (and more favorably) to Peter Boland's Charity Shop Mysteries.

Four stars. It would be a good choice for readers who enjoy light amateur sleuth cozies featuring eccentric mature female sleuths. Morwenna is charming and refreshingly intelligent.
