Praise for Kari August: “Entertaining, original, exceptionally well written . . . impressive storytelling talents.” Midwest Book Review

The harsh and rugged Colorado frontier of 1875 is not the type of place most would consider suitable for a recent widow to establish a home of her own. Yet that is exactly what Henrietta Schodde determines she will do as she impetuously buys a cabin in the newly forming settlement of Estes Park. Despite assurances from Henrietta that the locals appear amiable, her relatives are concerned and recruit the assistance of long-time family friend Collan Wallace, who unbeknownst to Henrietta, has also just begun homesteading in the area. The last thing Collan desires is to watch over the woman who has been his nemesis since childhood. But the pair quickly realize that there is more than each other to fight about when they discover an unscrupulous Englishman, Lord Dunraven, is hungry for their land. Endearing and engaging,
Settling the Wind, is historical fiction based on actual events that reveals the courage of Colorado’s pioneers in the face of more struggles than they could have imagined.

I really enjoyed the whole book. All the history and experience of the people who were alive back then. Just really glad you wrote this book about actual people and the struggles they faced

4.0 out of 5 stars Romantic Drama on the Frontier

My favorite parts of this book are the historical aspects. I loved reading about the frontier life that Henrietta embarks on as a widow. I almost thought it was too easy for her and she was incredibly lucky to have the different people happen to come into her life very early on in her new life on the homestead. Some things like “Oh, I need a cow” and then suddenly “Here, have this cow” that happened made me roll my eyes a little.

Overall, this was a fun read. The characters were well-developed, the pace was upbeat and quick with plenty of “several weeks later…” kind of time blocks. There were a lot of characters in this book representing the town of Estes Park: Henrietta, Whyte, Collan, George, The Fergusons, The MacGregors, Magpie, The Farrar Brothers (Clint, Hank, and Ike were like the Three Frontier Stooges but without the over exaggeration), Abner, Tinker, and many more. All were well written, but they were all well done. I don’t think that the book really captured the harshness of daily life for homesteaders. Even with the help of all her friends, the sheer amount of work required to live would have been a lot more monotonous and wearisome. I really thought that the villain of the book (Dunraven) wasn’t really necessary to throw obstacles in the way of things. The harshness of life could have been just as dramatic and exciting. Henrietta is a typical heroine of the novel in that she's a good person, thus good things happen to her. Pretty light-hearted read overall.

3.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable portrayal of the outdoors scene.

Spring of 1875, Colorado Territory. After her husband’s accidental death, Henrietta sells her home in Grand Lake and moves with her family in Fort Collins. The death of her husband left her harboring immense grief, and she believes she is uncapable of becoming romantically attached to someone else. Henrietta learns the hardships of living in frontier country, but she manages to build a health number of amities amongst her new neighbors. She also finds herself unexpectedly forming a close bond with a childhood friend. Things take a turn to worse when an Englishman enters the scene, pretending to possess the lands of Henrietta and her neighbors. The story is lighthearted, easy to follow, and easy to empathize with its characters. Author Kari August does a great job depicting the settler’s atmosphere. Her portrayal of the outdoor scene is remarkable, although at times it felt a bit heavy on the details, thus slowing down the overall pace of the book. The historic references were interesting, and any fan of romance/adventure will find a liking to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a fun book

Henrietta was a determined young woman setting out west to find her way independently. She had such a fun personality and lots of compassion for all!
Collan was well suited for her and loved her unknowingly at first but realized it later.
The different characters in the book was such a plus that made the book funny and interesting for the next page. Great book, highly recommend!

Reading novels about Fiction and history which are shrouded in mystery is always an exciting time for me, I always find myself wanting more and more of the story and this book wasn't different. It was pulsating right from the start, filled with fun, adventure, mystery and so on. I've read it thrice already and I'm sure I'll still read it a few more times lol, each time I read it the experience is even better.

The author did a fantastic job on this book, the writing was of a high literary quality right from the first page the pace of the book was steadily built and the pace and tempo increased as it went on, it got to a point I was so hooked I couldn't stop till I finished reading it. An all round complete and interesting book which I strongly recommend and I'll proudly give four out of five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Educational value and brilliant humor!

As someone who is generally interested in history, I picked up this book in hopes of finding out more about one of the most complicated periods in the history of America. “Settling the Wind” didn’t disappoint, and even exceeded my expectations in some ways.

The book tells the story of a recent widow who sets out to establish a new home in Colorado. You can see how this could be problematic even in our time, but the book is actually set way back in 1875. This fact provides solid footing for the book’s two best aspects - its educational value and its brilliant humor. Reading “Settling the Wind” not only gives you a historically correct perspective on what life was like for frontier settlers almost 150 years ago, but also makes you smile, laugh, and cry together with the characters. I find this valuable in any book, so I would definitely recommend “Settling the Wind” to anyone looking for a quality read.
