About this item

“America's favorite writer” (The New Yorker) begins a trilogy inspired by the inn she owns and the town she loves.

The historic hotel in BoonsBoro, Maryland, has endured war and peace, changing hands, even rumored hauntings. Now it's getting a major facelift from the Montgomery brothers and their eccentric mother. As the architect of the family, Beckett has little time for a social life. But there’s another project he’s got his eye on: the girl he’s been waiting to kiss since he was sixteen.

After losing her husband and returning to her hometown, Clare Brewster soon settles into her life as the mother of three young sons while running the town’s bookstore. Though busy, Clare is drawn across the street by Beckett’s transformation of the old inn, wanting to take a closer look…at both the building and the man behind it...

Fun and interesting suspense romance. The sex was soft and not explicit. The characters were fun and realistic. Hard working, regular folks with kids. I really enjoyed it.

This is the second time I have read this book and I loved it as much this time as I did when I first read it. Ms Roberts never disappoints, her characters are people you would want to know. The plots and storyline is beyond good. I would highly recommend this book

Nora Roberts knows how to deliver an entertaining story with likable characters, well-developed plot elements in a polished presentation. The Next Always, one of her latest installments, hits the mark on all of these points.

The first book in the trilogy, The Next Always begins with the three Montgomery brothers and their mother renovating the Inn BoonsBoro. The youngest, architect Beckett, lives above a pizza parlor and spends most of his days fine tuning his family's vision.

He also pines for Clare Brewster, the girl he has loved since high school, but who married another man and moved away. Years later, she is widowed, raising three sons and running Turn the Page, her bookstore.

After sparks fly between the two, Beckett finally makes a move. Together, they work through the real issue of how Beckett can fit into Clare and her sons' lives. They deal with their businesses, family and friend interference -- not to mention a stalker.

They also have to face the ghosts of their pasts, and one who is knew to them -- a woman who haunts the inn.

Set in Nora's hometown BoonsBoro, Md., the inn, bookstore and pizza shop detailed and in the book are real (and owned by Nora or her family members). While some might see this as shameless publicity, I see this as awesome publicity. If I were ever in the area, I would totally want to check out all three.

While we have seen some of these plot elements before -- like the inn and ghosts from the MacKade brothers quartet and the ghost from the In the Garden trilogy -- I still enjoyed the book. While I enjoyed reading those other two series, this one reached me a little more because it's told about people within my age range at the time I am that age. That might seem like a silly argument for why I liked it, but it still fits. Though her stories are to a degree timeless, it's nice to see characters who talk the way I talk and deal with things I deal with. I guess you can call it a modernization.

What I like best about this book, and any of Nora's books, is that you can consistently count on it having likable characters, a quality story and excellent execution. That never seems old or recycled.

The Next Always by Nora Roberts is a wonderful book! It’s full of love, discovery, family, suspense, some sadness, and discovery! I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in this series.

Read it and be prepared to purchase the other two books. I am a Nora Roberts fan (didn’t think I would be to be honest) and this book is different than other I have read (I have read many - MANY).
Beckett and Clara are wonderful and Lizzy is a lifesaver!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Robert's Best but Still Good.

This book ended up being entertaining but it took a good while for me to feel that way.

While I realize you have to do research on subjects you aren't an expert in to use for a story line, it doesn't mean the reader needs to know all of it.

I was getting bored early on from the detailed descriptions & explanations of the construction world. The majority of the information in the book wasn't in the least necessary and could easily make a reader turn away from continuing any further.

Once you get past floor installations, the laying of tiles, making sure shelves are level and even, taking out this wall or that one, the story does eventually get better but you've got to get past the first 40% of the book before that happens.

I give Clare numerous demerits for not acting on a stalker especially when this had been a pattern for quite some time. It wasn't just about her. She had three small children to think about & protect.
What this does to a character, is it labels them as extrordinarily stupid. Nothing about Sam Freemont constantly showing up is important throughtout the entire stalking situation and completely dismissed by Clare until friends butt their noses in and force the issue because apparently, Clare is a dummy. Got it.

The truly best part about this story line is the ghost and I sincerely hope this avenue is pursued a lot more in the rest of the trilogy....otherwise, these books will be seriously disappointing.

I have been an avid reader of Roberts for about 20 years. I guess everything she writes can't be wonderful. I will say however, that when you DO run across a bad one, at least it's not often.
