About this item

An unputdownable locked-room thriller about family, trust, and survival from the acclaimed author of the “utterly thrilling” (Lisa Jewell, #1 New York Times bestselling author) First Born.

When Caz steps onboard the exclusive cruise liner RMS
Atlantica, it’s the start of a vacation of a lifetime with her new love, Pete. On their first night they explore the ship, eat, dance, make friends, but when Caz wakes the next morning, Pete is missing.

And when she walks out into the corridor, all the cabin doors are open. To her horror, she soon realizes that the ship is completely empty. No passengers, no crew, nobody but her. The
Atlantica is steaming into the mid-Atlantic and Caz is the only person on board. But that’s just the beginning of the terrifying journey she finds herself trapped on in this white-knuckled mystery.

Some people have stated in their reviews that it was too long and that it was just unbelievable. Let me remind you that when you read fiction you have to suspend belief to a certain extent. No one is saying that every detail is going to be believable if I wanted that I would read nonfiction.
While the book was on the longer side I felt like it helped to build up the suspense and feel for the characters and hate other characters like a reality tv show. I won’t spoil it but from going into this blind and thinking it was the twilight zone happening I throughly enjoyed it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shutter Island Vibes

Pleading for my constant attention, this novel has a lot of small cliff hangers, so it kept me entertained. The end gave me Shutter Island vibes...who's telling the truth? Who can be trusted? 4 stars because I wanted more time in the end with the main character.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book ruined by terrible ending

A very appealing, sensitive narrator makes the inexplicable horrors she experiences compelling and the surprises shocking. But the ending is the worst copout I have ever encountered and it renders meaningless any previous possibilities of psychological insight. By the end the book feels like a total waste of time, as manipulative and superficial as that which it seemed to be critiquing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cannot Put Down Waste of Time

(SPOILER ALERT). I found so much of this book to be completely illogical and annoying. The premise is that four passengers on a trans Atlantic ocean liner are drugged and the rest of the 986 passengers and all of the crew are persuaded to leave the boat before it proceeds on its voyage to New York. The four passengers wake up to find they are the only ones left on the boat. This was a great premise which kept me hooked. Eventually (spoiler alert) the four passengers bond and quickly find out that they are part of a to-the-death reality competition which is being filmed for the dark net.

Sounds great, right. However, not ONE of the four wonders why their significant others agreed to leave them on the boat! Not one of them appears to be feel betrayed. Not one of them becomes unhinged at the thought of their every move, every utterance, is being recorded and downloaded to a worldwide audience. Are there cameras in the toilets? You will never know.

Then the games begin. I will admit I skipped this part of the book and tuned in to the end just to see what happens. There is another instance where my credulity was stretched, which I won’t detail. I won’t give away the ending either. If you are a fan of reality entertainment, this is the book for you. Alas, I am not so I skipped to the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't expect a smooth sail; prepare for a turbulent and wicked ride!

But in the morning, Caz wakes up to an empty ship with no Pete, passengers, or crew in sight. But that’s just the beginning of the terrifying journey she finds herself trapped on in this white-knuckled mystery.

THE LAST ONE is an action-packed thriller about a group of passengers trying to survive the vacation cruise from hell. Caz and a handful of passengers wake up to an empty ship: no crew or loved ones in sight. What brings them on this solo voyage? You'll have to read to find out! I, unfortunately, can't say too much without spoiling the surprise twist! I adored Caz as one of the prominent voices. She was empathetic, brave, and highly strong-willed, considering the horror around her. The other characters eventually grew on me, besides Smith, who I pictured throwing overboard a few times.

As the chapters progressed, the terror grew at an alarming rate. Lives were at stake, and I was at the edge of my seat until the startling reveal. Will Dean‘s storytelling was so stimulating that it breathed new life into the thriller genre. And once I thought it all wrapped up, the last page knocked me on my feet! I fixated on the end, feeling flabbergasted and slightly unsettled. It's a good book if it has you thinking many days later! The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because some parts felt a bit lengthy and redundant. Overall, THE LAST ONE is an exciting treat that may steer you away from vacationing on a cruise ever again. Don't expect a smooth sail; prepare for a turbulent and wicked ride!
