About this item

Summer, 1816. A notorious rebel is about to meet her match in this gorgeous and spicy regency romance, perfect for fans of Bridgerton, Lisa Kleypass and Eloisa James.

Lady Georgiana Pendlebury is no stranger to breaking the rules of polite society. But when a so-called ‘friend’ invites her to a clandestine party, Georgiana is shocked to discover the event is more scandalous than even she could have imagined. So when a mysterious stranger offers help, she accepts, not realising their encounter will turn her life upside down.

Later that summer, Georgiana is invited to attend a house party at an infamous castle in Yorkshire. The gathering is a loosely veiled effort to arrange a marriage for the Duke of Northriding, who desperately needs an heir. Duke Gabriel Mauleverer has a terrible reputation as a rake, and Georgiana is happy to be a guest purely for the entertainment, but upon arrival, she is shocked to discover that the Duke is none other than the stranger who rescued her weeks earlier.

As the other ladies vie for the Duke’s attention, Georgiana is desperate to avoid their shocking secret getting out. But she finds herself caught, unable to avoid Gabriel’s gaze. Are they a threat to each other? Or could they be the answer to each other’s greatest desires?

4.0 out of 5 stars IN NEED OF AN HEIR

Lady Georgiana is known for her escapades among her family. This particular evening she's at a masquerade dressed as a boy. Shocked, she is unable to stop looking at the guests. Where are their clothes? She's rescued, then willingly seduced by a gentleman with "glossy black hair streaked with silver-grey." Thinking they will never meet again, she attends a house party and is introduced to the host, Gabriel, the Duke of Northriding, the gentleman from the masquerade. Imagine his surprise when he recognizes Georgie! In need of a bride, maybe he's already found his duchess, but Georgie's not so willing to say yes to his proposal.
A frustrating, scorching read with interesting results.
Explicit sex.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from NetGalley.

At times I found myself in the weeds and had to go back and read parts again. Maybe that says more about me than the book? I read a great deal though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, well written romance

This is a well written book and a funny romance. The main characters are well developed. Georgie and Gabriel are delightful! I want to hear more of their wonderful love story! The 2 gay couples are discussed within the family in very loving ways. This was a nice touch. It's nice to read a book on Kindle Unlimited that has been properly edited.

If you love Georgette Heyer's writing style, but wish her books had some spice - give this one a try. This is actually the second book in a series (the first being The Runaway Heiress) but I read it without having read the first one. I never felt lost as to what was going on, although at some point I did check Orchard's other books because it felt like there was probably a story behind Georgiana's brother's new marriage - and indeed that's the story told in that first book. I really enjoyed this one - the characters are interesting and there's definitely chemistry between them from the start, despite their age gap. Orchard does an excellent job of taking that initial physical chemistry and growing it into something much deeper as they get to know each other better. I enjoyed the humor she added, and the slightly over-the-top villains. She also gives us a wonderful sense of place, especially at the Duke's castle on the coast. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series - and to reading Emma Orchard's previous books.

Thoroughly enjoyed the author’s writing style, loved the characters, and found the book delightful.
Decided to purchase the remainder of her books.
Author advised to follow her on X, formerly twitter, so I did but did not leave a post.
Immediately, author blocked me for no reason. Guess she was having a bad day.

This hero and heroine are different. Their story is told differently and successfully. I relish their interactions, struggles, and adventurous love story. In true Regency romance style, I adore this story and long for others as original and enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A writer with lot of promise but a book that lacks a storyline to hold the reader's interest

This is a very odd book. It is well written, and though the characters are overdrawn, they are appealing. The problem is that, for most of the work, there is literally no plot, so the reader is left wondering why the writer is dragging the book out long past when it should have finished when, suddenly, a small plot emerges to attempt to create an ending. Unfortunately, it is so slight that all the writer's undoubted writing skills just leave me regretting the book that this might have been. All that said, even though I got impatient with it halfway through, I will look out for other works by this author (at least on Kindle Unlimited).
