I love The Bound and The Broken series and to go back, even for a short interlude is fine. Vars is such an interesting character and to get a small glimpse of him back in the Glade was a treat. Cannot wait for book 4!

Fantastic little story. Great background for Great characters. It was a lot of fun to get a glimpse of the family before the events of the main series. Captivating and easy to read writing style.

An excellent short story by an excellent author that will give you a little input about a character and the life he left behind. But your past sometimes comes back to you no matter what.

This was such a fun short story. Serving as a whetting for book 4, Of Empires and Dust, next year. Vars is such an excellent character with staunch emotional depth seen in his love for his wife and children. His past is a mystery and over the course of the series you are revealed the perfect amount of backstory to move the plot along and increase your character return of investment.
This short story is a snippet of Vars before Of Blood and Fire. We are given more clues to his past and reminded again as to why the Bryer family is just so special. Being only 5k words, this short story packs a punch with character work, rich descriptive prose that quickly builds the setting and scene, Cahill’s beautiful fight sequences, and leaves you with an unsettling urgency to digest more of this series. Highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 starsExcerpt from Vars aka Cassian Tal

ARC reader here and I was super excited to get the email from Ryan stating that there was a new short story set in the world of the Bound and the Broken. Unlike any of Ryan's other "short stories" and novellas, this one is actually a SHORT story. A very quick read that allows you a glimpse of Vars Bryers life and his adoration of his family. Set before of Blood and Fire, you see young Calen, Ella, and Haem at home with Freyis as Vars goes about his normal days. However his life as Cassian Tal has caught up with him, and he must do what he can to keep his family safe and his children in the dark. A sweet short story that gives a small look at the new life of a warrior of renown that I wish we had more of. A small but great addition to the series!

In this latest novella belonging to The Bound and the Broken series by Ryan Cahill, we get a little insight into Calen's dad, Vars. This short story is set a couple of years prior to the first novel in the series, Of Blood and Fire, and we are given a hint of Vars' background and who he really is. This was a very short story but still provided some valuable information to the backstory of Calen and his family. I would definitely recommend it as every story we get from this series just adds to the overall world. I love this series and can't wait for the next book!!!!
Thanks to Ryan for the ARC and this is my honest opinion.

I originally read this story last December in The Advent of Winter anthology but just finished reading it again to refresh my memory. I really enjoyed getting to know more about Vars Bryer and seeing young Calen, Ella, and Haem with their parents. In this story, we learn some interesting backstory about Vars that helps give us some much-needed perspective on his secretive past. It also helps shed light on how Calen ended up becoming the man that he is. It was a quick, fun, entertaining and informative read. I highly recommend it if you're already a fan of The Bound and The Broken or if you're looking to dip your toe into this world for the first time.
