Lisa Scottoline, the #1 bestselling author of
What Happened to the Bennetts, presents another pulse-pounding domestic thriller about family, justice, and the lies that tear us apart.

TJ Devlin is the charming disappointment in the prominent Devlin family, all of whom are lawyers at their highly successful firm—except him. After a stint in prison and rehab for alcoholism, TJ can’t get hired anywhere except at the firm, in a make-work job with the title of investigator.

But one night, TJ’s world turns upside down after his older brother John confesses that he murdered one of their clients, an accountant he’d confronted with proof of embezzlement. It seems impossible coming from John, the firstborn son and Most Valuable Devlin.

TJ plunges into the investigation, seizing the chance to prove his worth and save his brother. But in no time, TJ and John find themselves entangled in a lethal web of deception and murder. TJ will fight to save his family, but what he learns might break them first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story of family relationships and intertwined mysteries

I could not put this book down. It was written so well that it just flowed from chapter to chapter. It was all told from one person's viewpoint which was like living the drama yourself.

hummm….wellll..I enjoyed this book, but I feel that it is also a departure from Ms. Scottoline’s other books.

A very well known family of attorneys; their children: two attorneys and an investigator for their family law firm (the investigator is the family black sheep - a recovering alcoholic). At first I actually had to double check that this was the work of Ms.Scottoline…it just felt so different to me from the way her other books open. Usually I am grabbed during the first pages, but this time I wasn’t. I had to keep reading. I worked at a court an and know many attorneys so I did not find the mid parts to be exactly boring, but I did not “catch fire” in the reading either.

i enjoyed this book for the many underlying, twining, plot lines and the excellent characters as the book explores family loyalties, faith, over weening pride, different kinds of addictions, and how one family can go through so many different phases is life and yet still maintain their love and character.

3.0 out of 5 stars Main Plot Catalyst Not Believable
Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2024
The characters are somewhat believable, but the reaction of the characters, particularly the two brothers, to a key point that the plot is based on and which occurs in the opening chapters, doesn’t seem realistic. I thought, really? The main character feels he owes that much to his brother?

Also the main character reads like a woman and not a man. Why do I say that? I don’t have specifics, but I did a double take when I finally realized it was a guy!

I couldn't put this book down. You take bad boy TJ,
who was really good, but an alcoholic in recovery. And good son,John, who was not so good. And you mix them up in a family law firm. I learned about how hard sobriety is for a recovering alcoholic, which was portrayed very realistically and how cruel treatment of prisoners were treated as guinea rabbits for drug experiments. I love Lisa's writing, the humor, and including true facts. She does marvelous research. Her book Eternal is one of my all time favorites.

A few times I was confused on the possible bad guys, probably as it should be. But, it kept me curious on where this investigation was going. I like a complete ending. It was satisfying. Loose ends tied up.

I like the family dynamics. It had me on the first page. I don’t usually write reviews but I thought this warranted an endorsement. If you like Lisa Scottoline books I am sure you will find this one one of her best!

I used to read all of Lisa Scottline legal thrillers but had gotten burnt out on her. I decided to give this one a try and I’m glad I did. It was a good read and I enjoyed the story.

Thanks Lisa, I’m back!!!
