I'm still getting to grips with Letty as a character, as she feels like a cipher with a Lucas Davenport mask on. She's too willing to kill, and not quite gritty enough at the same time. I want to like her more, I used to find the prey books lit up when she was around, but she can't seem to carry a whole book by herself.

The mystery is stupid, and the things they were asked to do felt ridiculous to me. That's part of the problem too - it just didn't feel possible. Early Prey novels felt much more grounded and later ones had the earlier ones as ballast. By the time Lucas is running around the country doing whatever he wants, we'd seen him be a cop within a tight system for 20 books. It's just weird to see a young woman do the same.

So I haven't given up on Letty - Sandford has well over 50 books under his belt and he's smooth and accomplished writer, so it's an easy read. But the problems of the first book weren't really fixed here. I hope the next one does better.

I have read most of John's books, but lately I have moved on to Amazon Prime books. I read the first Letty book and decided to try this one. As I approach middle age, I have found that my concentration has been failing. I read a few pages of a book and return to it later. I found this book to be so fast paced that I couldn't put it down! Very well written, great characters, and action. I hope that there's another Letty book coming.

Short review: read it.

John Sandford is a must buy, must read author. Easy to follow stand-alone. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama.

This storyline focuses on Letty without any appearance from Lucas, Virgil, etc. Intriguing storyline that is both informative and realistic. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and memorable dialogue.

“Some of our members are only social in the sense of being sociopathic. All of them are decent shots, though. Ranging from good to fantastic.”

I will re-read this story and always look forward to, pre-order when possible, new works by this author.

Not Reacher, but still entertaining

Fast paced, exciting action thriller, typical of John Sanford, with a pinch of violence, just as we like it. Not much of depth, but that wasn’t an expectation to begin with. Better character building and humor would put it closer to Reacher level.

This is the second of, what I hope to be, a long series starring the daughter of Sanford’s best known hero. She is in her 20’s, smart, pretty, and knows how to shoot. She works undercover for Homeland Security. In this plot, taken from the headlines about Russia’s invasion, she is sent to infiltrate a group of hackers. There is plenty of action, and we get to meet new, hopefully recurring, characters. My only criticism is there is generally a lack of “snappy repartee”. There is more humor in the Lucas Davenport series. All in all, Letty is a well written character. And I eagerly await the next in the series.

Liked this one. Letty Davenport, Computer Hackers, Russians, a tad bit too much government for me but loved the usual mayhem that ensued. Kept me busy during my week of no electricity after the storm here in Houston. Pretty good read
