About this item

A shocking discovery of human bones reopens an almost fifty-year-old cold case—and rips apart the lives of a group of friends—in a riveting novel by Loreth Anne White, the Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestselling author of The Maid’s Diary.

When human bones are found beneath an old chapel in the woods, evidence suggests the remains could be linked to the decades-old case of missing teen Annalise Jansen.

Homicide detective Jane Munro—pregnant and acutely attuned to the preciousness of life—hopes the grim discovery will finally bring closure to the girl’s family. But for a group of Annalise’s old friends, once dubbed the Shoreview Six by the media, it threatens to expose a terrible pledge made on an autumn night forty-seven years ago.

The friends are now highly respected, affluent members of their communities, and none of them ever expected the dark chapter in their past to resurface. But as Jane and forensic anthropologist Dr. Ella Quinn peel back the layers of secrets, the group begins to fracture. Will one cave? Will they turn on each other?

The investigation takes a sharp turn when Jane discovers a second body—that of the boy long blamed for Annalise’s disappearance. As the bones tell their story, the group learns just how far each will go to guard their own truth.

This was our book club book and it was very easy to read, several different characters and some twists. But trigger warning for people who don’t like to read about death, family conflict, addiction, etc.

Again, Loreth knows how to tell a good story!
She also doesn't go on for pages over- describing a scene or feeling.
Just perfect, well done, recommend reading.

I’m not usually a crime novel reader, especially with the main character being a cop. This was really good, though. It did take me a little while to keep all of the characters straight, but once I did, the story really pulled me in. Plenty of twists and turns! I can usually figure out “Who done it?,” but this time I had no clue! I’ll definitely read more of her workshops . Highly recommended!

Likable characters - and dislikable characters. Tightly written plot. Well edited, though it dragged a bit before the climax. Kept me guessing (which is difficult to do). Well written. Recommend as a good read.

Homicide detective Sergeant Jane Munro was brought in to investigate the bones found on Hemlock Mountain. Jane is a veteran detective that’s been undergoing therapy since her fiancé disappeared six months ago on a hiking trip. Sergeant Jane Munro is pregnant and her fiancé didn’t know.

Angela Sheldrick is a crime reporter for CBCN-TV. She’s looking for a breakthrough story to catapult her streaming career. Instead of working with Jane to provide recent current information she uses unorthodox methods to retrieve her information making her Jane’s nemesis. Jane needs to stay a constant step ahead of her. Sheldrick is known for sensationalizing news for clickbait shock value.

The bones found lead detectives to investigate six people who held onto a secret dating back to 1976. These six individuals have so much to lose. Even without there truths the bones will tell detectives what they aren’t willing to tell.

One thing any reader can count on when reading a Loreth Anne White book is her attention to detail. She provides readers with an informative read. This is a character driven in which readers must pay close attention to all the information provided since there are six possible suspects. I admit I’m horrible at keeping track of this many characters so I just go with it and let Loreth Anne White tell her story. This became more of a who-dun-it once the six characters were introduced. I was extremely fascinated by how the medical examiner was able to pinpoint the time period and other insetting aspects of the cause of death from reading the bones.

The best way to experience any thriller is through an audiobook. Carly Robins was the solo female narrator who performed the role of Jane. I’m an eyes and ears person who benefits from having my eyes on an ebook and my ears attuned to the voice of a good talent. I’m pleased to say Carly brought this story to life with her exceptional voice acting skills.

Always writes such a great story! Characters are so developed and you feel you know them. She brings you right into the story and you just can’t put it down. So much depth and you don’t want to leave the story or the characters. She brings it all full circle and completes the story with satisfaction. All of her books are a 5 star!
