About this item
I’ve been faithful long enough.
I never claimed to be a good man, but I’ve always done what was expected of me.
Find a nice girl. Get married. Have children.
That was my duty as a good Christian man.
And everything was going as planned when I met Briar.
Beautiful. Charismatic. Sexy.
But marriage is hard, and after seven years, I feel like I’m failing.
Then, a figure from my past enters the picture.
Dean Sheridan is cocky and charming. When this twenty-six-year-old needs a place to stay, I should turn him away—especially after I notice the spark between him and my wife. But I don’t.
When I pressure him about his relationship with Briar, he does the last thing I expect.
He dares me.
He thinks he can take what’s mine.
And if it’s a challenge he wants, it’s a challenge he’ll get.
What started as a game becomes so much more.
Between them. Between us.
This isn’t how normal couples behave.
The games we’re playing are dangerous.
And the roles we’re playing are far more.
But God help me, I can’t seem to stop.
What we’re doing is wrong, but it feels so right, and before long, I don’t recognize the good husband I used to be.

I like that for all the taboo and spice Sara Cate infuses into her books, they are always, at the heart of the stories about relationship dynamics. Often things that any couple can relate to as being a challenge. Briar and Caleb struggle with communication to the point it has changed their relationship to be unrecognizable. They have polite respect vs really getting what they want from the other. Dean has a unique and powerful way that helps them figure this out. The story is told in flashbacks and present day. You get the guy Briar fell for in Caleb, as well as the man he is today. This really showed how far they had strayed from their initial passion. Flashbacks of Dean’s story are also included and really shows his evolution as an individual.
I love that this story continued the family drama set in The Anti-Hero, but if you want to read this as a standalone, that is absolutely possible. This story fills in the pieces for those new to the series, but also gives you a deeper glimpse to those already invested.
I knew at about 70% left in the story that this was my favorite novel by this author. She just made me feel so much, from so many perspectives. The characters each had so much growth, but also felt like they stayed authentic to themselves. This story was just a little different for me, just a little better, just a little more perfect than I could have imagined. I loved this story that went far beyond my expectations.
I absolutely LOVED this book. I enjoyed the writing style very much as with all of Cate’s books but honestly I just loved the love. I read Give Me More and I absolutely devoured that book and this book was different but the same and I loved that. I love that Caleb didn’t fight who he is, Dean gave love a chance and Briar just loved them both. They fell into an effortless kind of love that we all hope. Also, the smut was on brand and on point. The lace panties were a brilliant touch to show everyone has a feminine side. The DP was by far the best scene though.
You did it again Sara and I cannot wait to see what the next book in the series has to offer.

"Love doesn’t live in perfect little boxes and abide by arbitrary rules. It grows and spreads, and we are all just pawns in its game."
"We don’t sacrifice who we love just to make our lives a little easier."
I cannot begin to explain this way this book had me terrified, turned on, crying, and laughing throughout it's entirety. It was intense, emotional, spicy, and absolutely incredible.
Can we just talk about the immense character growth for each of our main characters for a sec? Briar is a good, christian women. She follows the rules, abides by societal standards and by the end of this book she's a completely different woman and it was incredible to see her transform. Caleb is the protector, the husband, the father and he had hidden part of himself for so long and so deep that he didn't see what he was missing for what it was. Once he owns up and acknowledges everything, he becomes even better. And Dean, oh good Lord Dean. This man! He's guarded, closed off, and hates to rely on anyone but himself. As he opens up and lets himself love and be loved in return it is just pure magic. I am so head over heels for these three.
The way they fight for each other and love fiercely is so beautiful. This was an amazing read and I'm already missing them.
“You might be married to him, but you belong to me.”
