About this item

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is certain of three truths: People don’t just vanish into thin air. Never anger old people. And don’t do what Tiki tells you to do.

“The most popular mystery writer alive.”—The New York Times

After a slow summer of chasing low-level skips for her cousin Vinnie’s bail bonds agency, Stephanie Plum finally lands an assignment that could put her checkbook back in the black. Geoffrey Cubbin, facing trial for embezzling millions from Trenton’s premier assisted-living facility, has mysteriously vanished from the hospital after an emergency appendectomy. Now it’s on Stephanie to track him down. Unfortunately, Cubbin has disappeared without a trace, a witness, or his money-hungry wife. Rumors are stirring that he must have had help with the daring escape . . . or that maybe he never made it out of his room alive. Since the hospital staff’s lips seem to be tighter than the security, and it’s hard for Stephanie to blend in to assisted living, Stephanie’s Grandma Mazur goes in undercover. But when a second felon goes missing from the same hospital, Stephanie is forced into working side by side with Trenton’s hottest cop, Joe Morelli, in order to crack the case.

The real problem is, no Cubbin also means no way to pay the rent. Desperate for money—or maybe just desperate—Stephanie accepts a secondary job guarding her secretive and mouthwatering mentor Ranger from a deadly Special Forces adversary. While Stephanie is notorious for finding trouble, she may have found a little more than she bargained for this time around. Then again—a little food poisoning, some threatening notes, and a bridesmaid’s dress with an excess of taffeta never killed anyone . . . or did they? If Stephanie Plum wants to bring in a paycheck, she’ll have to remember: No guts, no glory.

5.0 out of 5 stars this series has everything!

The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich has become my favorite series. This series has it all- adventure, mystery, comedy & romance! I would recommend this series to just about anyone who’s stuck in a genre-rut. I was reading nothing but romance novels, and this series definitely pulled me out of it. I look forward to reading book 20!

Stephanie and Lula run into more trouble as bounty hunters. The lines are so funny and the trouble never ends. Fun read.

We really, really, hope there are more than 1 or 2 more books in this Stephanie Plum series. I know this series has been around for years and it appears some readers are growing frustrated at the suspense between Stephanie, Joe and Ranger but choice or no choice We truly do hope the series will continue for many more episodes/years. If more than one book per year were written I would like it, and read them. We personally think there is enough material/many characters that can be highlighted, for example, Jeanne Ellen's relationship with Ranger, the former mud wrestler or others (could cause some heat and raise the excitement level a few notches). He is too sexual a character to have no one but Stephanie in his life for how many years? Joe and his many past flames (some surely were a bit more important than others), Connie and her mob connections, Ranger could reveal more about his past, Grandma Mazur, Grandma Bella, Terri Gillman, more about Stephanie liking what she does (maybe she's more the career type than mother?), etc. Look at how many cop type shows are on television. We truly find the books humorous and appreciate the laughs. Some books have more laugh out loud moments than others, Notorious Nineteen didn't have as many of those moments for me but that's the way it goes. Maybe the abundance of comments had/have an influence. We agree with other reviewers/commentor's that this book seemed a bit different or off. The more competent/mature Stephanie may have made the story less humorous. No mention of the love potion Joe drank and the end of 18. Ranger certainly seems to be accepting that Stephanie has chosen (many times Joe over him). And Joe is leveling out to working cop/boyfriend. We would like to read about more relationship and funny/exciting stuff... Stephanie getting in more serious trouble or Lula or Connie or Vinnie. Glad Steph finally admitted she liked being a bounty hunter. Does she really want to get married? Is her mother really that big an influence? She seems to be her own person.

It also seemed there seemed to be strain between Stephanie and Ranger, Ranger didn't notice/comment on cut on Stephanie's arm which he normally would, no mention from Steph that she could feel Rangers energy when near, and Rangers line that he was "fond" of Stephanie (has said a couple times that he loved her) was of a downer since we are Ranger fans (though Joe's solid too). But then if Stephanie is moving on and choosing Joe which consistently seems the case, then that makes some sense. Ranger accepts the choice obviously. Ghost writer or not, we hope the series continues, I will be reading and enjoying.

Some of the lines that referenced prior conversations, prior books, seemed wrong (inconsistent, closer review/quality control could help) but we did not do a book by book analysis. In any event this book was enjoyed. There always seems to be leaps/gaps from one book to another. Devil is in the detail as they say, guess it is challenging to include more detail though it would be great to read it.

I and my friends who read this series would like to read more about how Ranger is "magic". Joe in love with Stephanie for 10 years? Why is it not a good idea for Ranger and Steph to be together (book 8). Never enough detail about the mystery man. We would prefer to read this detail than the often repeated information describing Joe's house, the exit of Grandpa Mazur... and the cases.

Most likely will not run out to purchase, read and get involved with new series with one book per year, with relationships taking 10 plus years to develop (unless Ranger ... and Stephanie are in it). Neither my friends nor I were Monk fans. I also tend to lose interest when a relationship is developed quickly (thinking of another authors series with woman detective and rich husband that she married in book 3).

Like another reviewer, we were unhappy that the kindle version (my preferred format though I sometimes share paperbacks with friends) of the book was as expensive and the print version. Though I am loyal to this specific series (hooked actually), read a few others by JE but didn't enjoy as much, the pricing could likely influence my (not sure about friends) purchasing behavior in the future.

This was another great read of the Stephanie P!um saga. She's maturing,it seems, and handles her job and her two love interests quite well. She has her boundaries and holds to them fairly well. Great storyline and a fast read!

5.0 out of 5 stars HAVE TO LOVE THE CHARACHTERS

Having read all of Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books I can see why Plum continues to stand out and be the success it is for Evanovich. We may be strong, professional, independent women but at the end of the day, we want to know we are chicks sought after by the hot guys!
The two guys are fighting surreptitiously over Stephanie as they all try to catch bad guys. Ever mindful however that Stephanie should be treated equally, the guys offer just enough help to keep her safe. Allowing Stephanie to experience her own successes, however many explosions it takes! And, it gets better! How much more exciting when both of the guys have really hot body's and are slightly "bad boy", of course in a good way. One is the "boy next door type" who has longterm potential for the white picked fence route. The other, he smells like the perfect mix of rain, has killer cars, showroom home and shows up like a Knight in Shining Armor when needed but disappears just as fast.
In Evanovich's Plum books we get to see everyday reality mixed in with enough drama to make it exciting, a dash of fairy tale for romance and a sprinkling of reality to make it laugh out loud funny.
Evanovich writes the female characters with real life challenges - bad hair days, jeans that won't button, guns with no bullets, pets that barely qualify. Evonvich takes these characters, develops a story line, weaves in all the idiosyncrasies and presents a plausible, entertaining read. To the extent, that you will likely look up to see who might be wondering why you are laughing out loud while sitting alone! Deeper though, she shatters stereotypes about what men are attracted to. The Plum character perpetuates that men are attracted by more than conventional terms. That hot guys are just as attracted to confidence, curiosity, vulnerability and sometimes just the ability to understand their need for sports. Male or Female Evonovich not only defines the characters but their individual stories. Putting you smack in the middle of each so that you vicariously live their lives and emotions. No matter the character, your in a constant state of relating to the "people", Genius!
Predictably the cute, sexy guys are fighting for Plum but guess what! She writes a story that allows you, no matter your life, to see a piece of yourself in Stephanie Plum. So go for the sexy guy who is out of your league, he too is just a scarred little character hoping Evanovich writes him in with perfect hair, abs of steal, a hot car and lots of macho quick one liners! 5.0 out of 5 stars She’s a disaster magnet!
Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2024
Everywhere Stephanie Plum goes, disaster is sure to follow. In this book more cars go up in flames, several people try to kill Stephanie , and she keeps getting tied up or stun-gunned or both. She doesn’t have much luck capturing her bail jumpers — except for one memorable capture at a nudie beach.

Her boyfriend Morelli wants her to find another job. The fact is, Stephanie likes her crazy job and her disaster-prone lifestyle. She’s good at figuring things out too, and sometimes she actually helps people.

I love Stephanie and her lovers. The secondary characters are wonderful too.
