About this item

A defense attorney is prepared to play. But is she a pawn in a master’s deadly match? A twisting novel of suspense by New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni.

Keera Duggan was building a solid reputation as a Seattle prosecutor, until her romantic relationship with a senior colleague ended badly. For the competitive former chess prodigy, returning to her family’s failing criminal defense law firm to work for her father is the best shot she has. With the right moves, she hopes to restore the family’s reputation, her relationship with her father, and her career.

Keera’s chance to play in the big leagues comes when she’s retained by Vince LaRussa, an investment adviser accused of murdering his wealthy wife. There’s little hard evidence against him, but considering the couple’s impending and potentially nasty divorce, LaRussa faces life in prison. The prosecutor is equally challenging: Miller Ambrose, Keera’s former lover, who’s eager to destroy her in court on her first homicide defense.

As Keera and her team follow the evidence, they uncover a complicated and deadly game that’s more than Keera bargained for. When shocking information turns the case upside down, Keera must decide between her duty to her client, her family’s legacy, and her own future.

Enjoyed book immensely except for chess moves, A game I do not play. Characters were interesting and fit quite well in the story. Family relationships were explained adding a homey element but also showed a familial inclination to drink too much.
Courtroom scenes and procedures were absorbing, some times funny and other times appalling. The author was thorough and I was entertained while reading book in one day.

Great read and great beginning to the series. Plot is exciting, lots of twists, but the characters are the core and make you keep reading.

This is a new series for me. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. A combination of murder mystery, legal and police drama, Irish family issues /background, and drinking problem (s) hopefully leading to recovery kept me interested... But the plot twists at the end were the best! I look forward to more in this series.

What do Irish drinking genes & chess have in common? Both can make a story much more entertaining than you would think.
The author weaves very human characters into a tense and gripping courtroom drama. The dead stay dead, the good stay good, but each character makes their own reasonable choices to create the impossible murder. It is both solved and resolved by the courts and desperate reactions of those who had run out of places to run.
Read it. Seattle in summer can be gorgeous but too hot some days.

Keera, Patsy, Vincent, Rossi, Anne, and Lisa were well developed characters and believable. The story took many twists and turns, especially with the trail of witnesses known by Vincent. I thought the chess angle distracted somewhat from the story, since I don’t know anything about the game. Overall, the book is well worth the read.

Excellent characters & a fascinating story. I assume we'll see the folks again. I also liked the brief mentions of detectives from the Cross white series.
