About this item

In the new fast-paced medical thriller from bestselling author Robin Cook, fan favorites Jack and Laurie are inadvertently drawn into a dangerous vortex of a series of homicides that have been cleverly staged as suicides.

After Dr. Jack Stapleton’s near-death confrontation with a medical serial killer, his wife, NYC Chief Medical Examiner Laurie Montgomery, is carrying the load both at work and at home. When Laurie insists that Dr. Ryan Sullivan—an underperforming senior pathology resident who is spending his required month at the medical examiner's office but who truly detests doing forensic autopsies—assist her on a suicide autopsy in hopes of stimulating his interest in the field, the last thing she expects is to be unwittingly drawn into a major conspiracy that puts her own life in jeopardy.

Desperate to avoid performing as many forensic autopsies as possible, Dr. Ryan Sullivan offers to participate in a research project on a series of suicides put together by one of the medical legal investigators. These suicides, like the case Ryan analyzes with Laurie, hint at some bothersome questions about their "manner of death." Although the project was more of a ruse than a serious study, Ryan surprises himself by immediately uncovering unexpected shared commonalities. Most astonishing of all, Ryan's inquiries eventually put him and Laurie at risk by leading to a nefarious cancer diagnostics company that promotes the very latest, groundbreaking cancer screening technology in a shockingly self-serving and fraudulent fashion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Medical Mystery with Familiar Characters

I really enjoy these forensics books because I can count on Robin Cook to include details that are enticing and a mystery that is engrossing. This one was no exception. I did like the new character, Dr. Sullivan, and thought he was very realistically portrayed. The story moved at a rapid pace and the familiar characters were like old friends. Although part of a series, this book can easily be read as as standalone.
I checked out this book from my local library using the Libby App. I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions expressed are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Story, With Amazing Characters!

I thought this latest offering from Robin Cook was quite interesting! It is nearly impossible to read any novel written by Robin Cook and not learn some facts that you had no idea were true!
But this newest novel combines not only interesting truths, but also some
heart-pounding suspense!

I have now read two of Mr Cook's books in the last few weeks, and I have to admit that I enjoyed both of them immensely!
He really is the kind of author that wins you over by the time you finish his 1st novel! And when you complete his 2nd novel you can't wait to tell everyone just how much you enjoyed every line of his work!
Thanks to Robin Cook-- and please keep bringing these wonderful page- turning novels to Amazon!

3.0 out of 5 stars Suicide in every paragraph
Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2024
This book is dangerous for at risk people… suicide is contagious… don’t buy this book… Robin Cook is my favorite author. I own every book he has ever written since the 1960’s. This book went in a different direction. It’s like a sad short story… no suspense… just suicide statistics and information that anyone who has ever dealt with depression or suicide does not need to read…

Stimulating for most of it but did bog down in some areas. Did note the use of more uncommon words being used. Not necessarily medical terminology. I have a medical background and read voraciously but had to look up numerous new words. Not a bad thing but unexpected.

5.0 out of 5 stars I thoroughly enjoyed this book but...

the epilogue dealt with the results/resolution much too quickly IMHO.
There could have been much more involvement of Laurie and Jack in determining the pursuit of justice in this case.
Small complaint since I, as always, enjoy Robin Cooks stories that won't allow me to put the book down easily.

Thank you Mr Cook!
