About this item

A courageous wife, mother, and resister confronts the devastation of World War II in a heartbreaking and hopeful novel by the bestselling author of The Venice Sketchbook and The Tuscan Child.

Londoner Madeleine Grant is studying at the Sorbonne in Paris when she marries charismatic French journalist Giles Martin. As they raise their son, Olivier, they hold on to a tenuous promise for the future. Until the thunder of war sets off alarms in France.

Staying behind to join the resistance, Giles sends Madeleine and Olivier to the relative safety of England, where Madeleine secures a job teaching French at a secondary school. Yet nowhere is safe. After a devastating twist of fate resulting in the loss of her son, Madeleine accepts a request from the ministry to aid in the war effort. Seizing the smallest glimmer of hope of finding Giles alive, she returns to France. If Madeleine can stop just one Nazi, it will be the start of a valiant path of revenge.

Though her perseverance, defiance, and heart will be tested beyond imagining, no risk is too great for a brave wife and mother determined to fight and survive against inconceivable odds.

Rhys Bowen's writing is very compelling; her research intensive; and the storylines extensive. One can learn a lot of history by reading her books! This book, The Paris Assignment, was outstanding with well developed characters and surprising outcomes. My wife has already read it and a friend borrowed it yesterday . Excellent reading!!

A family is torn apart by the war. Focuses on England and France, but moves on to the orphanages in Australia. Well written, terrific, in depth character development. A terrific read,

I truly enjoyed this book. It was easy, light reading. It was sad, due to its nature concerning WWII, and the atrocities that were committed back then. There were also wonderful moments of survival and reconnections. It was well written and well laid out. For an easy light read, I would definitely share this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Separated by War: A Mother's Search, a Son's Strength in "The Paris Assignment"

Rhys Bowen's "The Paris Assignment" offers a compelling perspective on World War II through the eyes of Oliver, the son of Madeleine and Giles. Separated from his parents for his safety, Oliver embarks on a poignant journey filled with uncertainty and resilience.
The narrative cleverly shifts between Oliver's experiences and his mother's, creating a captivating contrast. As Oliver navigates unfamiliar surroundings and the anxieties of separation, readers develop a deep empathy for his plight. Bowen's portrayal of Oliver's courage and adaptability in the face of adversity is both heartwarming and inspiring.
Oliver's journey becomes a unique exploration of war's impact on children. Witnessing his growth and resourcefulness amidst the chaos adds a layer of emotional depth to the story. Overall, "The Paris Assignment" offers a memorable perspective on the war through the innocent eyes of a child, making it a captivating read

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat convoluted

Have read several Rhys Bowen novels and thoroughly enjoyed them. They always end leaving the reader dangling as if there was to be a follow on novel and this one follows suite. This novel was different In having a series of negative events with a ray of hope following each. The positive event that over rode the negative was virtually predictable. Simply stated, the reader would easily be able to predict what would happen in future chapters. Typically, authors attempt to steer the reader in the wrong direction so the outcome would be a revelation. The story was still interesting, bringing the horrors of WWII to the forefront but was not the best of Rhys Bowen.
