About this item

Zanders

Chicago hockey isn’t complete without me—everyone’s favorite player to hate. I know my role, and I play it well. In fact, I thoroughly enjoy spending the majority of my game time in the penalty box before leaving the arena with a new girl on my arm each night.

What I
don’t like is the new flight attendant on our team’s private plane. She works for me, not the other way around. But I’ll be sure to remind her of that, and I can guarantee, by the end of the season, she’ll be begging to quit her job.

But every road trip blurs the lines, and I can’t quite figure out if I keep pushing that flight attendant call button in order to push
her buttons or if it’s more than that.

Stevie

I’ve been a flight attendant for years. I thought I’d see it all, but when my new job lands me onboard working for the most egotistical and self-righteous diva in the NHL, I start to second guess everything. Including the promise I made to myself of never hooking up with an athlete again…no matter how annoyingly tempting he may be.

Evan Zanders is unfiltered, unapologetic, and too attractive for his own good. He loves his image, but I hate everything about it.

Everything but him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hockey romance with banter and amazing characters
Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024
Mile High is the first book in the Windy City series and it has been on my TBR for so long. I honestly don't know why I've been putting off reading it, because once I started it, I just couldn't put it down. This contemporary hockey romance will take you on an emotional ride, with amazing banter and swoon-worthy moments.

We follow the story of Stevie and Zanders. Stevie is a flight attendant for a hockey team that Zanders is a part of. The chemistry between them can be felt from miles away and the banter between them will have you laughing. They do give off a bit of an enemies-to-lovers vibe, but REALLY a little bit. While the MCs are wonderful to read about and getting both POVs was the absolute best, the side characters are also likable. The little moments between Maddison, his wife, and the kids were what I was looking forward to the most. And getting to learn a bit about their story from the conversations was so much fun.

Overall, if you haven't read this one yet, you simply need to. This romance felt so mature and hearth-warming that I can confidently say, this will be one of my favorite reads this year.

4.0 out of 5 stars 1st Read of 2024 ????: A Hockey Player with Tattoos and a Bad Mouth Equals Perfection

    ????SPOILERS????
    ⭐️: 4/5

This is my first hockey romance read, and I can say I was enthralled. When it comes to sports romances, hockey has been the number one book released. As a person who doesn't watch or know anything about hockey, I was not interested in reading a book about it.

But Mile High has been on my TBR for over a year. As a person in a book slump, I needed a book to read that I have dragged on to read.

Zanders and Stevie were everything. I loved the representation and the fact they were opposites.

I will say first this book was too long to me. Romances should be no longer than 350 pages unless it is a fantasy book or a book that chronicles a story over time, including a time jump. When it comes to that, it can be a maybe. But it was too long, and at times, lines seemed repetitive, and scenes seemed like filler.

Also, I cringed at times when Stevies hair was always brought up to describe her. I love the representation, but when curly haired girl or curly hair flight attendant kept being used to describe her, I was becoming slightly annoyed.

What I didn't like was the third act breakup. In books, breakups are not always neccesarry, and Zanders reason for leaving Stevie was unnecessary. For Zee to not see that his agent was screwing him over was surprising because I knew his agent was low down and drity from the beginning. A well accomplished player not getting offered a contract doesn't even sound trustworthy.

But other than that, I enjoyed the book!

I loved the representation of Stevie being plus size. As a plus size women I understand the insecurities that come and the drive to become small. I have learned, however, that it is not about weight but health. I loved seeing her gain her confidence. She was an overall sweet person who eventually stood up for herself against her mother, ex-boyfriend, and even Zanders at times. I ❤️ everything about Stevie, especially her love for dogs as well.

    Zanders.

He is a man I would go to the ends of earth to find. From being a hockey player who was incapable of love to becoming the person to fall first, it was satisfying to see. I didn't know he would fall first, but seeing that happen was amazing. The way he treated Stevie should make some men come our and take notes. My favorite scene is when she goes over the things she doesn't like about herself, and he tells her why he loves it instead ????????. It was heartwarming. Also, watching him go to therapy and interact with the people around him, I couldn't get enough of that. We as society deem men to go to the therapy weak, but Zanders proved that wrong. Seeing him have panic attacks always reminded me of mine, and they were written exactly how they happen. If you know how to handle them like Zanders, they will happen, but the goal is to control it and not let it control you. Zee is one of my favorite male characters in a book. I loved his team, sister, father, and the positive company he kept around him. I was glad when he told his mom off. Facing your triggers head-on is how to combat mental health at times.

This book was great! I can't wait to read Indy and Ryans' story because I heard that is the best book out of the series. A book I really want to see is with Rio he is hilarious with his boom box. But this is my first read by Liz Tomforde, and it will not be my last.

I recommend this book to all. It has a clear message. Love youself and love others who deserve it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An all-around great read!

Mile High is outside the norm of what I normally read (dark romance or books with lots of trauma). I picked Mile High up because I had a few good friends rave about it, and let me tell you - I’m incredibly glad that I did!

This book is a lighter, feel-good read that is very character driven. And in a character driven story. I have to like the characters to stay interested. And like them, I did!

I instantly fell in love with Stevie, the FMC. She is so real and honest, and truthfully, I saw a lot of myself in her. I loved her character growth throughout the story. It was amazing to see her shine more brightly in her own skin by the end of the book. The moment she gave Evan the side eye and crap that he deserved, I knew that Stevie and I would get along JUST FINE.

Evan Zanders was the MMC I didn’t know that I needed. He starts off as this self-absorbed playboy, but I love how Liz Tomforde guided us through why he is the way he is through his internal monologue and story. By the 50% mark of the book, I was ready to marry him!

I loved Stevie and Evan’s banter and love language of giving each other crap. I do this a lot with the people I love, and it was so endearing and funny to read. It felt so genuine and reminded me of my relationships with the people I’m closest to.

There wasn’t a moment in this book where I felt bored or thought I would add something or take it out. It was a perfect, easy read and I will recommend this book to any of my friends that are looking for a book in this genre!

Trigger warnings - One thing that I want to call out is that Stevie is a beautiful curvy girl that struggles with her self image and her weight. There are times in the story where she is treated as “less than” by others because of her looks (not by Evan, the MMC). This could trigger some readers that struggle with these same things. I loved how Evan helped Stevie feel confident in her own skin, and told her that he’d love her body even on the days that she couldn’t. **Swoon**

On to the next book in the Windy City series!
