5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap but good

My initial impression of this toaster was that if felt cheap and flimsy. However, I've been using it for over a year now, and it hasn't let me down yet. I use it mainly for waffles, occasionally for Pop-Tarts. It does a good job with both. It's easy to clean, and I appreciate its compact dimensions. It's styling is... okay. Looks low rent next to stainless steel, but, at this price point, I can't complain!

Ultimately, I can't find anything wrong with it. It succeeds perfectly at being a small, simple, affordable toaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars It toasts bread exactly as I want; I have not tried bagels or waffles yet.

When my 20 year old all metal toaster recently retired, amidst a lot of smoke and screaming alarms, I wanted to go buy another one. My $7.00 toaster is no longer made, nor is the company still American made and American manufactured. Research indicates none fit that requirement. So I began looking at reviews and never realized toasting bread had evolved into haute cuisine. They actually made and sell $200 toasters? Anyway, I digress. After a lot of research I bought this toaster. I inserted by first two slices and threw them away, because that was my plan from the start. Anything new should give a trial run, simply for taste, hygiene, and possible packaging residue. It also told me the medium setting was a little light for my taste. I bumped it up a smidgen and got exactly what I wanted. As others have mentioned, the dial to change browning is VERY sensitive and easy to bump by accident, so once you find your exact setting, don't handle the toaster roughly or it will change. I am very pleased with my purchase and didn't have to take out a home equity loan to buy it.

So okay... It's a toaster.... And an inexpensive one at that. I am not typically a guy who searches out the cheapest thing especially when it comes to appliances or "durable goods". But with a toaster, I thought I would just give it a try. This toaster replaced an earlier, far more expensive, upscale model that performed just "okay" and lasted about ten years. Since I no longer really care about what visitors think about my purchase decisions and I am no longer interested in "keeping up with the ...", I figured this toaster would be fine.... as long as it worked the way it was supposed to. The one it replaced was also a Cuisinart..... long slot, beautiful finish, high tech controls, heated with fancy glow bulbs.... Well, the bulbs gave up and it seemed such a waste of time and dollars to try to replace them... especially since the toaster never performed nearly as well as it should have (considering the original price...). So I decided to go the opposite way this time. This Cuisinart toaster looks good, toasts two slices at a time, will accept and toast bagels and English muffins, and works the way it was designed (at least so far...!!).

Toasting normal sandwich bread is easy. Set the darkness to the center (#4) and push the lever/handle down. Shortly you will have toast. Both sides toasted to a close approximation of each other. If you toast other bread styles like the more upscale bakery breads (7-grain, Oatmeal-honey, All-grain, etc., ...) then you will probably need to set the control to #5 to get a satisfactory "crunch" on your toast. English muffins take longer (in all toasters..). Bagels toast fine too. If you use the special bagel "feature" (button..) then the bagel will toast mostly on one side.... And as long as you put the bagel into the toaster the same way each time, it should be mostly satisfactory. I like the defrost setting... It works. I will usually keep a loaf or two of bread in the freezer... The defrost setting allows you to defrost and toast quickly. Should be a relatively simple process ... and apparently it is because it works the way it is supposed to.

I like the wide slots and the way the toaster keeps the bread centered (mostly... as long as you aren't toasting really thin bread..). The cord is short, but that is to be expected because the law requires it. It can be routed around several little hooks on the bottom of the toaster so that it exits out from under the base on the side or the rear... whichever you prefer.

Overall, I'm happy. If it quits tomorrow, I will send it back. If it quits after a few years, I will have received my money's worth of use. No complaints.

The toaster worked decently at first and was very cheap. My family likes to toast stuff (including two children), so it got very regular use for the last year. Over the past few months the mechanism that stops the toast from popping and activates the heating element has been failing, becoming a very frustrating experience for whoever is using it. I can imagine it lasting longer with gentler use, and the price point is such that I'm not outraged, but don't be surprised if yours doesn't last very long.
