Original Review: I am truly impressed with the Megawise Electric Kettle. The weight of the pot is sturdy, the shape and feel of the glass is lovely.
The base the kettle sits on has a remarkably sturdy cord but is itself a lighter weight than I expected or would like. (Update: the base is fine; it just took a little getting used to.) The cord wraps neatly around under the bottom base for storage. When plugged in, the cord fits the opening in the side perfectly so it will not cause the electric base to sit unevenly. The base and the bottom (metallic band) of the pot itself stayed cool to the touch, even when the water came to a full rolling boil. I don’t expect to keep a silicone pot holder under it to protect the Formica countertops as it does not seem to need it at all.
When you switch the kettle on, it lights up! The soft blue color can be seen in the video (which shows from switching the pot on to pouring the water to make the tea). It has an automatic shut off feature to stop it once it comes to a full boil and stops itself from boiling dry. I would have preferred it to switch off sooner, once it comes to the point of boiling; this comes to a full, rolling boil. Do NOT overfill this pot or you will have boiling water splashing everywhere! Personally, I will turn this off and make my tea long before it gets to that point. It took about 9 minutes, I think, to come to the full boil, but as I said, I will figure out how long it takes to get to the perfect temperature for tea and turn it off then. (My tea kettle holds about the same amount of water—1.8 liters—and takes at least 11 minutes on the gas stove to come to the perfect tea point, so this is quicker, probably by several minutes; I just haven’t figured out the exact timing yet. Water temperature will affect the time.) The last thing is it only lists the amount of water in liters, no mention of cup measurements. That’s okay—we should have switched to metric 50 years ago, anyway. The Maximum fill Line says it is at 1.8 liters.
