5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable!

What can I say. This oven is amazing! To be able to cook a frozen pizza to as close to perfection as they can get, to perfect, evenly toasted bread, to roasting a tray of veggies - so far it has done everything I've asked of it. Not just done the job, but done it well, without any fiddling. And the fact that it air fries (only tried it once with tater tots so far) and dehydrates (planning to make beef jerky soon), as well as toasts, roasts, bakes and broils - it's just icing and sprinkles on top.

The controls are easy to use. I haven't done any phase cooking, not sure just what I'd even need that for. But the rest is fairly intuitive.

Now that I've learned to trust it, I can put something on to cook and ignore it while it cooks. I was never really able to that with any other toaster oven I've owned, and there have been several. Others, various brands - cooked unevenly, had to be watched carefully when toasting bread, and just generally were not "set-and-forget" appliances.

As a widower living alone, this is the only oven I need 99% of the time. Big enough for a 12" pizza, and easily holds a 1/4 sheet pan. It's a bit slow toasting bread, but the fact that the result is as near to perfect as I've ever gotten from any toaster of any type, a couple of extra minute per 4 slices isn't that big a deal. This oven preheats faster than my GE electric range, and uses far less power. Definite win there.

I can't recommend this Breville Smart Oven highly enough. Giving it 5 stars is barely touching on how much I enjoy cooking with this wonderful tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn’t be happier with this Breville!

I’ve had this oven a little over a month now, and I love it! It replaces my Cuisinart Convection Steam Oven – two years into owning that toaster oven, the steam option died, so I was left with convection bake, and broil, and toast. This Breville is miles ahead in my opinion.

I cook a lot, I bake a lot. If I can use both my Bosch oven and my toaster oven, I’m happy. If I can use only the toaster oven, I’m even happier (doesn’t heat the house up as much, the energy consumption is less). I’ve roasted a whole chicken, made air fryer chicken nuggets and chicken parmesan, roasted mixed vegetables, made air fryer sweet potato fries, roasted nuts in the shells, baked 3 types of cookies and 1 cake, 2 batches of muffins (3rd came out today, house smells like cinnamon), baked beans, and well… a lot of cooking in the past month. Oh, and toast and bagels every morning! I’ve used the Roast, Bake, Broil, Air Fryer, Toast, Bagel, Cookies (yes, cookies!), and Proof settings.

What I love about the Breville:
*The knob controls. My Cuisinart used 1 knob for primary controls – multiple controls. The Breville is so user friendly – my non-cooking husband has no problems figuring it out. The controls and buttons are all labeled and easy to understand.
*It’s spacious for a toaster oven. I mean, toaster ovens shouldn’t be overly huge, they need to fit on a counter. I can fit 2 medium casseroles (reheating is such a joy with this oven!). I can fit my 12-muffin pan in it. I can fit a small roast and a small whole chicken in it.
*It has a dedicated convection button. Love that and so easy to use. It has a “phase” button. You can set it to brown a roast, then bake (or roast) it. I often need to broil after I bake something, and that’s what the phase is for – does it after you program it, automatically. 2 different cooking methods and temps and times, one time setting.
*It has a countdown timer which shuts the oven off. Some like this, some don’t. I do. I will still use a separate timer, and often set the oven a little longer than needed – but, you can always add time, or change the temperature while you are cooking. You don’t have to stop the oven to do this.
*It stops the timer when you open the door. Thank you, Breville. You get it.
*It’s a toaster oven and makes great toast! Nice and crunchy outside, softer inside. Settings for light to dark and setting for number of slices. Do keep in mind, a larger toaster oven will take a bit longer to toast than a very small one.
*Air fryer… I didn’t want another item to store. But we are trying to eat healthier. While this isn’t a dedicated air fryer and might not have quite the power, we’ve really enjoyed our crispy chicken nuggets and chicken parm, the crisp of the sweet potato fries (took me a while to get the timing and method right, but wowsers!). Comes with a really nice sized air fryer basket. I spray it with a bit of olive oil, and find even if cheese gets stuck on, a soak in sudsy water and a quick rub with a stainless steel cleaning pad makes it sparkle again.
*Oh, and the magnet on both sides of the door – it’s for the air fryer basket, which can get very hot… so when you open the door the air fryer basket gets pulled out a ways for you. I love the person who came up with that brilliant idea!
*Comes with a pizza pan (haven’t used that yet) and a roasting pan, which oddly, I have used for the first time in my life. I line it with foil or parchment, and the weight of it is perfect for baking fish, chicken, or roasting veggies. Anything, really.
*I’ve set this under an 18” high cabinet (standard) and after 1-1/2 hours baking, and finishing with a quick broil, the cabinet underside has not gotten overheated.
*I love the crumb tray/removable bottom. Many toasters have this now. I lined mine with a 500 F Teflon oven mat (purchased on Amazon, of course), in case I get any drips or messes. Easy to clean!
*It preheats very quickly with a clear flashing ‘preheating’ text, and an alarm tells you it’s time to put your food in, and another lets you know when the time is up (plus the interior light comes on just before, so you can take a look at the progress).

Honestly, I could go on and on. I’ve found no negatives thus far. I find myself saying each time I use it: "I love this oven!". Highly recommend!

Our Breville Smart Oven BOV800XL finally broke after 10 years of almost daily use, so it was time to replace it. Another Breville, no question - but which one? The newer Breville model (BOV900BSSUSC, the one in this review) seemed like the obvious choice, but I was afraid it wouldn't fit on the counter or it would get too hot under the cabinets.

Short answer: It fits! It doesn't get too hot! It works great! Best choice! How did I live without it??

Long answer, for those who like to overanalyze everything (not that I'd know anything about that...):

*** How big is it? ***
- Width: 21.5"
- Depth: 15" not including handle, 17.25" with handle
- Height: 12.375" not including handle, 12.75" with handle
See the attached pictures for how it compares with the BOV800XL.

*** How loud is it? ***
Quieter than the old one. The older 800XL convection fan was loud and almost rattled. The new one has 2 fans: one to cool the electronics and one for convection. Even with both fans, cooking with normal convection is pretty quiet. Airfry turns the convection fan up to 11 and makes a serious whoosh. I don't use airfry much (regular convection works just as well for most things we cook), so it's not a big deal.

You want numbers? I got numbers. With the decibel meter sitting on the counter next to the oven:
Baseline room noise: 33dB
Oven, no convection: 55dB (mostly the electronics fan)
Convection: 57 dB
Airfry mode: 69 dB
(Note that when the fan first starts, it's louder, maybe 66dB, for 1-2 seconds until it gets up to speed. That's how the old 800XL fan sounded all the time.)
Check out the attached video if you want to actually hear it.

*** How hot does it get? ***
After 15 minutes of convection roast at 450°F:
- Top front: 215°F
- Top back: 160°F
- Sides: 140°F
- Glass: 235°F
- Door: 220°F (top and sides), 170°F (bottom)
- Back: 135°F
- Wall behind it, a few inches away: 90°F
- Cabinet above, 7" clearance: 90°F
The cabinet above it does get warmish inside, so if you store your chocolate or cooking oils or other heat-sensitive stuff there, you might have a problem.

*** How well does it work? ***
Great! Having a 2nd oven is amazing for when I don't want to heat the big one, or need to cook things at 2 different temperatures, or need to keep something warm while the rest of the food finishes cooking. This oven has 10 settings, but I use only a few of them:
- Toast: Slower than a toaster, but cooks the slices evenly.
- Bake/roast: Temperate is accurate, cooks mostly evenly (there's a slightly hotter spot in the front right).
- Airfry: I never had a standalone airfryer, so I can't compare. It does make things crispier compared with normal convection. Usually I just use the airfry basket with the fan on normal convection, and that seems fine.
- Slow cook: Never used it.
- Reheat: As far I as I can tell, the only difference between reheat and bake/roast is that for reheat, the timer starts when the oven starts heating. For bake and roast, the timer starts after the oven is already heated. Subtle difference, but surprisingly convenient for not overcooking your leftovers.

tl;dr: Oven is good. I like it.
