5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT! I'll use it all summer instead of my big oven
Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2024
I confess, even though it's for the kitchen, I bought this so that I could carry it outside this summer for baking (we don't have air conditioning). I haven't had to carry it outside yet! Yes, unbelievably, it preheats in less than 1 minute. I didn't believe it until I timed it! I could SMELL my lamb chops broiling before I could feel the heat coming off the oven!

The outside of the oven does get VERY HOT. Hot enough to burn so you should be careful no children can touch it and probably keep plastic dishware away from it.

Obviously if the oven is hot, it's adding radiant heat to the room, but I haven't felt any increased heat. The oven itself is hot but I don't feel the extra heat even a few inches away! Like I said, I haven't felt the need to carry it outside even though that is why I bought it. It doesn't blow hot air into the room like my oven and my old toaster oven.

I'm glad I read someone else's review that mentioned the SP101 is easier to clean than newer models. This is so easy to clean! Not only can you remove the bottom tray, FINALLY a toaster oven that lets you open the bottom of the oven! An especially nice feature given the size of this oven. It would be impossible to clean if the bottom didn't open.

Buttons aren't intuitive (and I can't read them without glasses), but they were easy to learn: On, Function, Timer, Temperature, Start. It's nice that it remembers the function (bake, broil, etc) and time and temp last used, but I haven't baked the same item twice in a row. I like that it turns off automatically when the time runs out.

In addition to broiling lamb chops, I have baked muffins and cookies and mini cheesecakes. The first batch of muffins burned because I didn't know to adjust for convection baking. Since then, so far, my recipes have turned out as expected when I've reduced the heat 25°F and reduced the baking time 25%.

The flip up feature is very nice and an efficient use of space. I think that novelty might wear off in my household. A month from now, it'll likely remain in the down position for convenience and laziness.

I've only broiled and baked so far - I haven't even made toast yet. (Palm to forehead: I just realized I ate bread instead of toast with dinner tonight.) I'm looking forward to trying the other features.

I wish the interior was about 1" taller, but I wouldn't trade that for the ridiculously fast preheating or for the chance that it'd put more heat into the room. I picked this size for its potential portability and I love what I got even if it never moves.

I am currently on day 2 of owning this thing so, really, consider this a first impressions review.

Firstly, the main draw: The flip-up feature. This really is a game changer and was chief amongst my reasons to buy this particular oven. I am happy to report that this feature works very well and gains me back a good amount of countertop space. It fits like a GLOVE flipped away under my wall cabinets. If you have low hanging wall cabinets, however, you'd do well to take a measure before purchasing to ensure you have access to this feature. This is what sets it apart from other products IMO.

Secondly: The power cord. Its bad. Specifically, when plugged in, the power cord extends straight out from the wall and I think the manufacturer absolutely, positively should have opted for a low profile plug-in, especially since this is designed to flip-up to stow away. This is a serious negative as you're not able to place this in front of the power socket its plugged into without the front of the oven protruding past the countertop and nearly falling off. If you have a very small kitchen, take a moment to be sure you'll have adequate room.

Finally, the real test: Cooking. So far, I have only reheated refrigerated pizza and air-fried some cheese sticks. To that end, this thing is a beast. The controls were easy enough to figure out without needing the manual. It has a great pre-heat feature which only starts running the timer after it gets to temperature, which is FAST. When set to 450F, pre-heating was less than 2 minutes. I was impressed. The food came out exactly as I hoped. They aren't kidding though, watch your food carefully when you first get it. Use the light. It can quickly burn your food if you're not familiar with convection and don't understand the lower cook times.

My only other negative is theoretical: Cleaning. I don't think it will be TOO difficult, as the bottom tray is easy to lift out, but if you DON'T clean regularly I can easily see crumbs and debris piling up in the back when the oven is flipped up. I think the solution is probably just being proactive with cleaning it. For the lazy, maybe avoid this one.

Overall impressions are very very good and, at the time I'm writing this, I'm not mad at the $170 sale price either. Go, Ninja, Go.

This was an upgrade from our old air fryer that didn’t hold a lot of food. Before, our air fryer would have a basket that would become scraped when cleaning with any abrasive material. (I know must appliances warn you not to, but how else would you clean it?) I’d worry that it would affect our food. With the Ninja, the pans are easy to clean with a Scrub Daddy. Just be sure to not let it sit in water long after use, and clean while it’s fairly hot, otherwise the pan loses some color. This issue maybe be user error :) .... The Ninja is a lot faster, has several functions ( including toasting for bread that lets you select the darkness level), holds a good amount of food, and saves space with the flip up function. I also enjoy how the color matches the other amenities in our kitchen like our microwave and oven, so it fits in perfectly. When we moved to our new apartment, I wanted to get rid of our old (faithful) toaster oven and the air fryer that took up a lot of space, and find a 2-in-1 that would function the way we needed. The Ninja was a great option!

The only thing I don’t like about this item is that it’s very limiting when you want to cook two foods at once. When using the top rack, whatever food you cook must be flat. One time I wanted to make broccoli with my chicken wings, and the broccoli prevented me from inserting the top rack due to their height. If it were fries, cool, but items that sticks up slightly makes it harder to cook family sized meals. Other than that, great product!
