I’m completely satisfied with my purchase of this fine guitar, and I’d like to thank all the people who have reviewed guitars on Amazon and helped me make my decision. The guitar arrived on the day scheduled, and the delivery person was very friendly. The guitar was double boxed and the packaging was in good condition. It was cold outside, so I waited about four hours before opening the package to allow the contents to reach room temperature so as to avoid damaging the finish.
The package contained the guitar, an owner’s manual, and a small plastic bag containing three small hex wrenches. The guitar was well padded with styrofoam and wrapped in a thin foam bag. The finish and color were very attractive, and there was no damage from shipping and handling. The guitar looked and felt solid and very well made. It’s very light for a solid body guitar, and the top and back of the instrument are contoured and very comfortable in the playing position. Acoustically, the guitar sounds basically like every other solid body guitar I’ve played. I know that a lot of guitar players like to know how a guitar sounds before it’s plugged in, but to me there’s nothing specific I can say about that, other than it plays very comfortably, with a thin, fast neck and low string action, well intonated along the length of the neck.
Plugged into a small five watt Vox amp, my first impression was that the pickups are very powerful, with a wide variety of tones available from the simple, intuitive control layout. The volume and tone controls are smooth, noise free, and easy to adjust with the knurled metal knobs. The selector switch gives me five different and useful tones, and it is hum canceling in each position. I’m a classic rock player, and this guitar easily covers that genre, and depending upon your amplification and signal chain, could be useful for anything from hardcore metal to blues and jazz.
Where this guitar really shines is the light weight, wide slim neck, and fast, low action. The manufacturer’s website gives the specs of the neck in metric units, so I will convert them to Imperial measurements for those in the USA. The scale length is 25.5 inches, not 24.75 as given in the description on Amazon, but that shouldn’t be a problem for anyone unless they have very small, weak hands. The neck is a very slim .75 inch from front to back, and the fingerboard radius is about 17 inch. This is pretty flat compared to most electric guitars I’ve played, and this facilitates easy playing and clean string bending. The guitar comes with regular light gauge strings, .010 to.046 which is pretty standard for rock and metal players these days.
This guitar plays very loud, fast and easy. It got a great setup before it left the factory. I know because I haven’t had to make any adjustments whatsoever to the action, intonation or pickups of this instrument. The Ibanez S design makes it easy on my shoulders and back, and it’s easy to reach the highest notes on the fretboard. I’m really excited and impressed with the way this guitar plays, and I’m able to do things on it that I can’t do on my other guitars. I did use the largest of the three supplied wrenches to check that the truss rod was working properly, and it’s just fine. I put the truss rod back the way it was after making sure it works the way it should.
I would recommend this guitar for a wide range of players, from total beginner to advanced professional musician on a budget. A lot of beginners would probably not want to spend almost five hundred dollars on a first guitar, but if that fits into your budget then you should consider buying an Ibanez guitar like this. A lot of people get frustrated by beginners guitars that are hard to play and maybe sound just so-so, and they give up before they really even get off the starting blocks. I would advise beginners to skip over the lower priced guitars, stretch that budget, and buy this guitar to start out on. There are so many advantages to getting something like the Ibanez S621QM. It’s beautiful, solidly made, well adjusted from the factory, and it sounds and plays fantastic.
To summarize, I am completely happy with the delivery, condition, construction, design, and utility of this guitar. I’ve gotten my money’s worth and much, much more. Five stars all the way. I would recommend this and if the need arises, I would definitely buy this again.
