5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite ukulele: full, rich, complex tone w/incredible projection; great customer service

HIGHLY RECOMMEND this soprano UKE!!!
I read recommendations about known-brand name uses on the various Facebook groups I belong to, but this little HOLA! soprano is the ukulele I use every day, the one I pick up to play, and it makes me smile. I've owned it for more than a year now. I bought it for travel, because this Soprano is smaller than my Concert uke to fit in a suitcase, but I find that this is the uke I play everyday.

I first bought this and the C-----ba U100SM Soprano to compare them, expecting to keep the C... but it was tinny and flimsy compared to the sound (tone & projection) and workmanship of this HOLA! I'd first seen a review of 10 best inexpensive ukuleles to buy on Amazon over at Youtube. This HOLA! was rated highest.... I also like the size of this Soprano fretboard for reaching the chords; don't find it too small at all. (I am a senior citizen female with medium size fingers...). I'm just about to tackle the E cord and find that my fingers can reach it.

PROS
- full, rich, complex tone with incredible projection
- low action makes it easy to get the chords clear
- stays in tune amazingly (after the first month of daily playing to stretch the strings)
- beautiful workmanship
- high quality padded case included
- a strap and built-in strap pins included!
- I haven't felt the need to change the strings (Premium Italian Aquila Nylgut strings)

Another PRO, customer service:
I have noticed here on Amazon reviews that the HOLA! company responds to problems and provides customer satisfaction. I think they are really proud of the workmanship and quality of these Ukes. I'm partly writing this review, a year after I bought it, because I don't see the HOLA! brand mentioned on Facebook groups for a terrific under $100 ukulele, and I HIGHLY recommend this instrument. I sometimes think about buying another soprano, but think, unless I'm interested in moving to the $300+ level of quality SOUND, there is nothing this HOLA! lacks...

CON
- I think the metal of the frets was a bit rough on the side towards me. I don't remember if I filed them down a bit, but they have never bothered me.

NOTE: you really do have to play it every day for the first month and stretch out the strings. I found the first 2 weeks, I had to re-tune it within a song, then the 2nd 2 weeks I had to tune it every session. But now I barely have to tune it ever, just a slight adjustment perhaps. I'm always amazed how it holds its tune.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first instrument

If this is your first uke, keep in mind that nylon (plastic) strings are standard even on professional instruments, and that they will need time to stretch (at least a day and up to a few weeks, depending on how much you play) before they will stay in tune.

MATERIALS
I wasn't expecting much at this price point, so I was pleasantly surprised.
+ The body seems to be made of actual wood rather than the plastic-wood laminate I was expecting. Plastic is easier to care for, but wood gives a richer sound.
= The frets and tuning gears are made of real metal.
= The binding, nut, bridge, strings and knobs are made of genuine plastic.
= The strings (high G at the top, followed by middle C, E and A) do come with a cardboard Aquila tag attached, as in the picture. The main selling point for Aquila strings is that they bring out the best in a cheap ukulele, but I'm not sure if that's necessary in this case.

WORKMANSHIP
This is where it seems the manufacturer cut corners to keep the price low. Most of the defects are only cosmetic, and the rest were easily fixed.
- Inside the body, at the top and bottom edges of the sound hole, there were some splinters. It was easy to remove the splinters without damaging the instrument, and that got rid of the buzzing I'd experienced the first few times I played.
- The fret wire ends are not completely smooth or flush with the wood. The burrs aren't big enough to scratch me or interfere with playing, but when I run my hand up and down the neck I can definitely feel them. I could fix this in a few minutes with a bit of sandpaper, but it doesn't bother me that much.
- The tuning gears look and feel very cheap. There's nothing wrong with them; they work, and will hopefully continue to work, but I won't be surprised if I need to replace them eventually.
- I can see some irregularities in the glue where the neck joins the body.
= The finish is very thin; you can easily see and feel the grain and flaws in the wood. I think this gives the instrument individual character and makes it look more "real;" someone else might compare it to scratches and dents in a car. It doesn't affect the sound either way.
+ Frets are correctly spaced. (This is very important, especially in a beginner instrument.)
+ Fretboard is straight and flat, as it should be.
+ Nut and bridge are at the correct height.
+ Strings were properly installed.

PLAYABILITY
I am very happy with the way this instrument sounds. It has a good, clear tone, and has not buzzed at all since I removed the splinters. The fretboard and string spacing are just right for small hands. Compared to a steel-stringed guitar, it is very easy to correctly fret the notes and learn new chords on an ukulele.

An experienced musician will want something nicer (read: much more expensive), but this is an excellent choice for a beginner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised

I got this ukulele for my four-year-old son and I and I am very pleased with it. I have only purchased one ukulele, but for the research we did this seems like a great deal for the price. PROS: I am satisfied with how long it stays in tune. The slotted bridge seems like it will minimize frustration while changing strings. The intonation is surprisingly good. Octaves stay in tune well until you approach fret 10-12. The tone is pleasant. Very impressed with the appearance - bound edges on the body, outlined sound hole, and black tuning knobs make it stand out in terms of appearance among ukuleles of similar and even higher price. We appreciated the fact that it came with a soft-shell case because it helps communicate to my son that this is an instrument and not a toy. Strap for the instrument works great and is easy to adjust. Picks are a bonus. The soprano size is proportionate to his body. CONS: The ukulele fits in the case, but it is a little difficult to get it in. It would be helpful is the case was slightly longer that we we wouldn't have to fidget with the head of the ukulele to get it settled into the case. Once it is in the case zips up easily.

Again, I can't review this instrument in relation to others because this is the only one I've played, but if you are looking for a beginner ukulele that isn't a children's toy then I would recommend starting here.
